I checked with a couple of Toyota dealers here to see how much it would cost to make a copy of my key for a 2006 xB. The first dealer said about $140 special order and required programming of my ECM.
The second dealer had said $12 for a copy cut and said that his parts list did not show the Scion xB requiring a transponder key.
One of the techs in the bay confirmed and said he came across a 2004 xB that did not need a key with chip. In all fairness, the dealers here in Canada do not see Scions.
Who do I believe?
Does the 2006 xB require a key with chip?
If so, can I buy a blank chip key - have it cut by a keysmith and program the car myself? I seen these keys listed for about $40-$50 online.

I have an early model 06 and it does not have an immobilizer chip in it, I wouldnt imagine the late model years would either. The tC is the only Scion with an immobilizer in it.
i can testify that my 06.5 does NOT have an immobilizer on it.
same here. i bought an alarm w/ remote start to put in my 05 tC and the install shop said it would be an additional $90 because the tC had the chip in the key. I traded the tC before i ever put the alram in and ended up putting the alarm in a 2006.5 xB and I wasnt charged the add. $90 because the xB's have no chip
My late (2006.5) xB has standard keys. At least I don't see any chips in there not the wiring diagram indicates enything special in the ignition key circuit.
I traded my tC in for an xB. I had my Viper remote start and 2 way security alarm removed...
I needed the Universal remote start transponder interface module...
The tC is verified as the only Scion to have the chip. 100% verified for U.S. Scions
If a dealer or a alarm installer tells you that you have an xB or xA and need the transponder interface... they are totally taking u for a ride.. just to get more money out of you.. or they are just simply we-todd-ed

I just took the key to my daughter's 2005 xB Release Series to Walmart to have a copy made, since we only got one when we bought it used a year ago. The lady told us that it has a chip in it & that a copy would only open the doors. I was originally going to get the copy when she said it would only open the door because I felt certain she was mistaken. Even though it's a plastic end on the key, its so thin that it looks no where big enough to contain a chip. Then she pulled out some specialized key in its own plastic packaging that was super fat & thick on the plastic end. Then she rang it up to check the price & said it would cost $63. I said nope! But when she tested the key by sticking it in a machine, she had it on the key chain with the remote dangling right next to it & I wondered if whatever was saying the key had a chip was picking up on the remote next to it. Does anyone know if the '05 xB Release Series would have a chip in the key? I still think she didn't know what she was talking about.
they tried telling me that at a Mazda dealership so i made switchblade fobs with the guts of 2 of my remotes in it so they would be right. not for xb tho, for my 2003 323F.....one with panic, one without. Still have an original setup as well.

Hi, my car is about 17 years old. I am not the first owner. Was a repossession from Texas. Like +10 years ago. I only got one remote and one key. The remote had been readjusted to fit on the key chain. For my Scion xB 2004 when I am looking for parts in Toyota web-site on the Driveline selection, mine is classified as A/T ( Authentic / Therapeutic or so?). The key have no chip. Never had a chip. There is only one key that open all. I do not use the key. If is low battery in the remote, then I use the key. Usually an electronic device is guaranteed to work at least 10 years. Every year after that is a gift of G-d. I am planing to keep this car because have a good rate of Gas / Mile, easy to find a parking spot, and I learn how to maintain.
Thank you.
This is how the key looks like after 17 years. Yes, there are cosmetic damages, but is functional.
The panic button is still working. This button I use often. When the parking lot is busy (School, Shopping Mall, DMV)
by pressing on red button, will make some noise. I just follow that noise and find the car.
Here is how is looking inside. My car mechanic 10 years ago fix it for me. Inside it is one chip and one battery.
Yes this is the old technology. In the future will be no use of a key!
