2 12's is always better, but that becuase it's more surface area pushing more air. So you'll need a bigger enclosure, and perhaps a different amp, etc... Buying the subs is somthing that can be decided by your budget. Good brands are alpine, adire, etc.. Think about how much space you have and how much money you have and use that to make your decision.

if you are going for sound then go for 12's. if you want more looks go for 15's. there will be no way to get a big enough box for 15's unless it is for show.

True, you would have to eliminate the rear seats to get enough space for an enclosure to work properly with 15's. I imagine 2 12's in the proper enclosure with enough power should be extraordinary in a Xb. Good luck.

it really depends on what woofers you're getting and the recommended boxes for them. is it going to be a sealed or ported box? i barely could fit my 2 12's ported and they are designed for small box applications. 1 15 ported would fit maybe 2 15's sealed if the are desinged for about 2.0 cubic feet. u also have to consider if you ever want to put anything in your trunk (cargo area) again.

I just installed 2 12's (shaddy kicker comps) in a shaddy enclosure (that takes up the entire trunk area, with a hi lo converter, stock head unit and a used 900 watt amp. Sounds good for all parts being sourced out for FREE. I dunno I am not a real bass guy just wanted to test my wiring and have some fun. I am looking to purchase 1 or 2 nice 10's. But I would definatly go with 12's.

I could fit two of the twelves I run in half the amount of space back there, maybe less if I tried.
Box size is dependant on the woofer and application, and power.

Check out www.edesignaudio.com for some kickass subs made specifically for small enclosures. I'm running the e12a in 1.5cuft sealed, it is, simply put...amazing.

I'm going to run my sisters e12kx in 1.0cuft sealed, you could definately fit two of those back there easily with tons of space to spare. And yes, they will "pound."

Dude, I've got 2 10's and I've got way toooo much bass when I play with my eq settings. How much bass do you want? BTW, mine are sealed in their enclosures. Using fiberglass made a sick box, plus it tuned the box for the right amount of air as well.

if you use a ported box that would be more room...basically double what a sealed box would be. i run 1 1000d memphis (1100 watts) with 1 memphis SHP. Sealed box 2 cubic feet. i hit a 147 db sealed rattles teeth....if you want deep bass that people can hear miles away and vibrates your teeth go for 2 15s and at least 1000 watts.....dont go cheap...as with anything you get what you pay for...i payed 800 for my sub alone. adn it was well worth it louder then most people with two 15s. i also had 2 mtx 8000 15s in my car with 1100 watts(memphis 1000d) it moved so much air and was so loud....unbelievable we put it on the mic and in a sealed box it hit 153 db(meca based mic) but then again i also run a 4 volt out head unit and a phoenix gold 8 volt line driver to a 30 band pg EQ with built in line driver. crystal clear sound. with remote bass **** built in teh dash cause it gets to to loud....

I agree with ikonXone about the 2 12s for sound and 15s for looks. I had a single 12 in mine but I opt for 2 12s for good bass hits. Not really earth shattering but good clean bass(makes a good massage chair ). I have 2 12" POLK/MOMOs in a premade box (1cubic on each sub) which is powered by an MTX Thunder801D Mono Block running at 2ohms.

Oh one more thing when getting your system done also make sure you make room in your budget for some sound deadender(sp?) like Dynamat, Tsunami, Fatman etc. Our box rattles pretty good with heavy bass esp the rear passenger side fender.(make a thoing sound)

Here's mine....

Hope this helps,

honestly since the xb is a smaller car with an open cabin (no trunk) it is really easy to get some decent bass response. if you get the kickers it will be loud (assuming you purchase the proper amp) but it takes a pretty large box to have them sound good. i personally love ported boxes but everyone has their own preference. if you are on a budget check out the phoenix gold subs on ebay for dirt cheap. they are the elite series or something like that and have gotten very good reviews.

Not to be mean, but this post is probably going to sound rough....

You payed too much for your subwoofer.... The number for that sounds dead on for a vented install, though.

BUT! With that other setup...the mic must have been broken, either that or it was outlaw... 2 Thunder 8k's would never do that, ESPECIALLY not sealed on a measly 1100 watts.

--- BACK ON TOPIC THOUGH ---

Anyway, bass response and woofer size aren't really all that relative these days. I have an 8" subwoofer that drops like it's no bodys business. I also have 12's that drop the same... louder? Sure, deeper? Nope...

I would put the money on a single 15 slot vented against most dual 12" sealed setups... tune to 30-35hz and throw 1-2k RMS on it, and you'll be happy... check out www.edesignaudio.com or www.respl.com two GREAT companies that will have people asking "what is THAT? Why is that THING so loud?!!"

Seriously

I know someone's going to ask me, "well what do you have smart guy...."

And I'll respond...

(10) 12" HSL Excursions and an MA HK-4000D (Benched @ 4778wRMS x 1 into 2 ohms @ 13.8v)

It's true, with the designs and technology these days, how deep a sub can go isn't dependant on the size if you get a good quality woofer. and the sloopy 15 myth is just that, a myth(when dealing with decent quality woofers). 15's can hit just as quick as a 12, they will however have more displacement.

When choosing nowadays it's a matter of...space and money. How much space can you use and how much money can you blow?

Snailshell's aren't necessarily the best... but theres a good chance they'll sound pretty good coming from John @ P4S.... infact, never buy one from anybody but him... he's the only one that knows the formula behind making one work... its technology he developed and perfected.

I bet those daytons sound tight too, probably drop like no ones business...
