6 1/2 speakers in the rear?????
Hi Guys Anyone Got pictures of bigger then the stock size 5 1/4 speakers. Correct me if I am wrong I just think I would get a better sound if I went with the componets up front and the 6 1/2 in the rear?????

You want a pic? Here you go:

It's at night, but you get the idea. I put 6½ in the rear (Pioneer four ways) and in the front doors...with 2 inch Pioneer two ways in the dash. WHAT a huge change in the sound.
It's great.

You'd get the best sound by leaving the stock rears, and taking the money for them and add it to your front components......You wouldn't face the rear exit at a concert with the band behind you......so why upgrade the rear speakers??? with components up front, you'll be able to place, on your dash, where each instrument is, provided their properly staged (placed/aimed)

Well, what tcguy said is okay if you don't ever think of the rear passengers. Which I do.
See, with the sub back there, it was more mud then anything for the back passengers. My brother never liked it, nor my peeps.
But with the new speakers in the rear, they hear the highs, mids, and lows. And, for me, I hear a more richer sound.
BTW, if you think so little of the rear sound stage ('you wouldn't face the rear at a concert with the band behind you'), then why have rear speakers at all in a car? Futhermore, when I saw Pink Floyd in 1990, (or was it 1989?) anyway, they had surraound sound set up (I know, I was on the floor of the concert; great seats) and you could hear David Gilmour play all around you. Yet, I knew he was on the stage, in the front, all the time.
So it made the concert experience all that m uch cooler.

well if you want to reproduce sound realistically like most people do you will turn down your sub volume and fade the volume to the front for your rear passengers. I am not knocking your idea to give the rear passengers more highs, but if you want to do that you should put the 6.5's in the rear passenger doors.

My sub is down (setting 4 out of 10) and I have the 6.5's in the front doors, as well as the rear...And I like to have the volume set neutral, front to rear...so it's evened out.

The idea of rear speakers is just for fill....also known as ambience effects...like the sound you get when something explodes on a movie and you can hear debris behind you hitting the ground.....the thing to remember about rear speakers is to attenuate them for the surround (or fill) effect to work properly.....

Otherwise, no, they are not. In a typical car set up, the rears are just that, left/right, all sound, but in the rear. Just like the front two, in the door, are left/right. The dash? The same thing. That is why the stock speakers in the dash have built in bass blockers, so you can hear the highs better. With my Pioneer front two way speakers, I also put in bass blockers, for the same deal.
Have a nice day.
I put 6.5's in the back of my XB
I had the rear seat out and the plastic trim piece off so I just used an air-saw to cut the hold a little wider (it is actually an oval shaped hole in there before).
6.5's fit with no problem, look completely stock once you put the interior back together.
However taking the interior that far apart is a bit of a pain. It all depends on how far you want to take it.
I put a set of inifinity kappa 3 way 6.5's in there model 63.5 IIRC. The imaging from the rear is not near what it should be, with both speakers firing directly at each other and shielded from the driver's ears by the rear seat they truly provide only fill no real stereo imaging.
I figure since I was in there an extra $100 for speakers was not going to kill me, and I definitly did not want to go along always wondering if I should have upgraded them then have to worry about tearing the back half of the car apart again when I finally broke down and bought new speakers

With a properly installed, staged, aimed etc system, you shouldn't be able to place where the sounds are coming from. Rear fill? Ehh... I don't like it, or prefer it. In my personal vehicle, I set it up where the subs don't overpower the mids, the mids don't overpower the highs... I keep everything equal so there's a full listening experiance from every seat. Unfortunately, without heavy modification, it's nearly impossible to create an ambient listening environment in a car, a tad easier in an Suv, but that''s not practical for me.

Well, I like to hear the 'stereo' sound. In other words, if a guitar is coming from the left, I want to hear it that way. And yes, a car, is almost impossible to create a perfect soundscape. But you can get very close.
I like what I hear in my Box, and frankly, so do others. To each his own, you know. And, remember, loud is beautiful, if it's clean.
