Adding extra Cig plug on dash?
How can I add an extra Power outlet or cigrette plug next to the cup holder in front of the passenger?
I want it there so I can plug in a dvd player or gps.
Can I just tap the positive wire from the cigarette plug, buy a new cigarette socket, drill a hole and put it in?
some say not to tap the cig lighter, why?

You really shouldn't tap the power socket for anything really. The amperage coming from this location is set specifically for a max draw. If you go over the max draw on the current, you can zap the fuse. What I would recommend doing, you can get a mini-add-a-fuse from most places with car electronics. Add in the new fuse to the fuse box and draw out a feed to where you want to put your new plug.
I ran a separate wire and installed 3 extra plugs for the same reason. I put a switch and fused it so it is it's own little circut.
Found it easier to do it this way. Mounted it just below where the stock plug was so I can reach it better.

You should be fine with 15A. It all depends on the amount of draw from all the devices plugged in and what the cabling is rated for. However, I wouldn't go any higher than 20A unless you know for a fact the wiring setup will work with the higher rating. You can read up on it at the12volt.com (awesome information to boot).
sorry i'm new to this stuff
what if I buy those plug in spliters that take one cig outlet and turn them into two?
whouldnt that be the same as drawing power from the cig to power another cig?
where do you guys that but in wii or xbox take the power from for the inverter?

i have ran an inverter from my cig lighter no problem. I think that people are telling you, is that if you try to use the one cig lighter as the base for powering everything you put in your car that you will blow fuses.
it sounds like you dont want to put much work into this, so buy one of those things that plugs in to the cig lighter, and makes it into three sockets. that will probably have another fuse in it anyway.
if you ever want to make it cleaner or permanant, then ask us for how to add a circuit cleanly....

thanks brownfaux but quite the contrary, I do want to put work into it and make it look clean.
I'm looking to drill a hole above the glove box and to the left where that cupholder is, (sort of on the side of the radio) I hope i described that correctly.
I just want to add another cig socket that will work just like the original to power a portable dvd player or gps of to charge my cell phone. I just want to know how many amps the add a circuit has to be to have as much potency at the original socket.
eventually I want to put a video game system under the passenger seat and add an inverter for that, but thats another project.
I just want a clean oem look and performance for this extra socket.
any pics would be great
tahnks

then i would add a circuit from the fuse box, wire it to another cig lighter, and add the cig lighter where you want it. the add a circuit can be found at any auto parts stores. it will give you the power wire you need, then choose a ground, underneath the kick panel works good.
or you could hardwire an inverter into the car. that would be just as easy, seeing as how inverters are basically made to be hardwired or used with the cig lighter.
I am basing this off of the inverter i have, which has + and - connections like a car amp, so you could wire it as such.....
then you could hide the inverter to run your nintendo.
as for the gps, unless you plan on taking it from one car to another, I would hardwire that as well.
I hate the look of a wire running down the car, and this will all minimize the holes you will have to drill in the dash, keeping your cars value. depending on the gps and it's power wire, we could tell you how to hardwire it accordingly.
