Default aftermarket keyless entry

I apologize if this has been posted already, but I could not find exactly what I was looking for in past threads.

My Scion is basically to get me from point A to point B. It is has no special features and do-dads. I want to add keyless entry, but do not feel it is necessary to do the whole security package that Toyota offers. Do you have any suggestions as to where I can find such a product to have someone install for me.

You can probably get a security system that includes keyless entry from any car shop.
You should call around, tell them you want keyless entry and that's it basicall.

Here is a car toys link. I do not know if there is one of those near you.

http://www.cartoys.com/cartoys/showp...TOKEN=82897485

They list 2 models, the cheaper one is on sale for $97.95

I'm getting my keyless entry and alarm with ignition kill put in monday. It's going to cost me less than it cost my husband to put JUST the alarm in his Sorrento. From the same people. Call around, I'm sure prices vary.

The keyless units I get are usually about $35 (dealer cost, or shop cost whatever you want to call it). They are basiclly alarms with no siren. You can get a keyless entry system from Best buy or the whatnot for about $75 installed. More than likely they will install a cheap alarm minus shock sensor, starter kill and siren. The Keyless is a total of 7 wires to hook up. If you would like I can get you the wire colors and locations. I poped an autostart/keyless/alarm in our Xa in about an hour. Really kinda nice.

The door lock wires are 2 wires in the kick panel in a huge white plug. It needs a double pulse on the unlock due to the way the doorlocks from the factory are.

The Ign wires can more than support the power needed for the keyless or even an autostart alarm are just below the strearing and covered with a hard plastic 90 degree elbow and electrical tape. Power for the Negitive pulse door locks (which most alarms/ keyless has) is picked up by grounding the unit, there is a nice big steel piece just to the left of the brake pedal on the firewall, this more than does the job.

1 power wire (not the huge red wire coming from the coloum (thats a 50 amp wire) is red with a white stripe if i remember right. This is the costant power needed for the unit.

1 Switched ign. wire if you want the doors to loco when the key is on. can't remember the color

1 ground.

1 Parking light wire (if the unit has a parking light output) you can usually change this to a dome light output for illuminated entry.

2 wires for the door locks. Kinda hard to find as you need to probe them while unlocking and locking the driver door via the key fom the outside. There is 4 or 5 wires that are the same color to trip the door locks though only 2 of them work to unlock all the doors.

The unit should cost you no more than $65 retail and install should cost you no more than $45. So under $100. Depending on the tools you have on hand you could save tyourself $50 and pop it in yourself. It really is quite simple. I hav a complete diagram for the car somewhere. In 2 weeks I've got to put the same alarm/ autostart/keyless in my mother in laws xA.

I'd be more than happy to get you pictures of that if you think you might want to do it yourself. Or depending on where you are I migfht be able to point you to a shop that won't screw you.

Default alarm system

Hi EexA

I have a xA RS myself and wondering if should go with a dealer/stores to install an alarm system. But in your posting, you said I can get a total pkg w/ autostart/alarm/keyless under $65 ???? Can you show me where you get this killer deal? And what kind of tools do I need if I am to do it myself? I have two other friends who know more than I do but it would be their first time to work on an xA, so if you have the pictures/step available like you said, that would be great~~
Your expert help is much appreciated. Thanks.

Default Remote Start write up coming soon

I've got to put a AutoPage RS650 Remote start alarm in my mother in laws xA next saturday. I'll do a write up on it with pictures. Prolly be able to post it sometime next sunday(the 7th of Nov).

Tools needed (try to gather before hand)
TEST LIGHT or MULTI-METER (this is a must have)
Crimpers (Please don't use the $3 pair from Pepboys or the what not with the built in wire stripers, these will bend when crimping the yellow connectors to the Starter IGN and ACC wires YOU DO NOT WANT TO RISK NOT CRIMPING THESE HARD ENOUGH, you could be stranded, due to the wires coming out, or run risk of popping fuses or voiding your warranty)
Wire Strippers
Electrical tape (Black 3m or Scotch, unless your like me and rewrapped the under dash in green! cheap electrical tape will fall off after about 3 weeks)
(Wire connectors should have the plastic coating on them, typically refered to as Marine wire connectors)
Red and blue butt connectors, about 15 blue and 5 red.
4 yellow butt connectors
2 Red T-Taps (For the door locks, if I didn't have them I woulda had a hell ofa time getting the door lock wires)
2 Red Spade connectors
1/4 inch drill bit
cordless or corded drill
(If doing an auto start you will need a 3/8 inch drill bit for the hood safety switch)
A Radio, as you will be sitting on the ground for 20 minutes at least, gives you something to hum to while looking at the underside of your dash.
Light, flashlight (if there is any chance you don't get it done before the sun goes down.
Soda, water, or beer if you really want to live on the edge (I will not drink when working on a car anymore, you might be different.

Oh and you need a girl around too, unless your a girl then you need a guy. They provide lots of feedback like "how much longer... do you know what your doing... dinners getting cold.. your so smart... I swear if you *&^$% up my car!"
It all pays off when you hit a button and it unlocks/starts/honks/turns on the radio, whatever you wanted it to do.

For those shopping (I hate using Crutchfield but here are ballpark retail prices)
Basic alarm with Keyless entry ($70) http://www.crutchfield.com/S-rJB6tTj...01&I=041CS2000
Sadly the above alarm is the same price as thier keyless

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eB...930057496&rd=1
Crime Stopper remote start for about $70

Somewhere I have a page with better products and prices, Give me sometime and I'll find the $75 remote starts.

Yes you can find cheaper ones on Ebay with LCD displays and the whatnot but this is an alarm, and possibly an autostart please do not skimp on the alarm or keyless quality it could save much time and hassle.

I'm also looking into getting aftermarket keyless entry in my xA when I get it. The dealer installed price for the Scion unit is freakin' nuts. I called a stereo shop here in town, and they can install a basic keyless entry w/2 remotes for $140. Does that sound like a good deal? It's a LOT better than the dealer installed unit.

If it atleast includes a starter kill and possibly illuminated entry. At $140 I would ask them how much for an alarm, with starter kill flashing lights and a shock sensor, chances ar it's $20 more than the $140 (which I think is a little high for all 4 possibly 6 wires they would be hooking up, just keylesses in Scions take all of about 10 mnutes to hook up) and you would have some piece3 of mind knowing you have more than just remote door locks.

He got his alarm/keyless from there. He installed himself.
Just want to share with everyone.

This may be an INCREDIBLY stupid question... but i'm gonna ask it anyhow.

I read on a web page that you can get remote start for a car with a manual transmission -- is this true?!!?! To me it seems that the safety feature of clutch/ignition activation (clutch must be depressed for ignition to even turn over) would prevent any such thing from working... but maybe they know something that I do not.

If anyone knows about this, i'd love to know more.

thanks

It can be done, however it is a pretty good pain in the ****. The last time I did a manual the set up went a little something like this.

(Car running your about to park it)
With the car running you:
1 Set the E brake (requires tapping into the E brake switch that says it on) make sure gear is in nutral
2 Either hit a button on the remote (Usually with the clutch held down) or push the clutch down while turning off the car (also requires tapping the clutch switch)
3. Get out of the car and arm the alarm

** In order for the remote start to work the next time no doors can be opened (this is going off the idea that you put the car in nutral when you shut it off (see pushing in the clutch as the trigger behind this) If a door is opened the remote start disables it's self, using the thought of a kid or someone could bump the car into gear. The clutch switch is hooked up to a relay that fakes the clutch being held down durring the crank on the motor.

It can be done and I have done 3 of them, though 1 installer I had fired and one customer droped by the shop to show off (back in the day before they took all the safety stuff into account) that they did remote starts on the manuals. 1 was a Dodge 1 ton desiel and a 90 Firebird. The Dodge customer started it after having it tinted thinking nothing of it. It started and drove over the curb across a parking lot, into a car and then pushed the car into a block wall. That was a tough one to explain to the cops and the owner of the sandwiched car. The Installer dropped by and left the car in 1st gear. He starts it, it jumps forward, I jump out of the way, it hits a huge concreate bird bath, whichs brakes sending the top part (about 4 foot wide and weighing about 40 lbs) sliding up the hood of his $2000 paint job coming to a rest on the windshield. Mean while the bottom slides under the car (which is only doing about 4 mph) and high centers on the tranny, the Firebird not being a wimp in the engine dept. continues to drive the car forward into the side of the shop (concreate wall as well) once it hit the shop the bird bath top part slides right back down the hood (again with the paint job) and slides of the coner of the fender. The car (Still trying to start) proceeds to burry the back tires about 8 to 10 inches into the dirt until he finally gets into the car enough to hit the brake pedal to turn off the auto start. He didn't hang around for cops and I laughed my ___ off, then sent him a bill for the bird feeder. I thin he's working at Audio Express in NM now.

It can be done but it's kinda like playing with a lighter at a gas station, Supposedly over the years they have gotten better with the safety features, but I could take any alarm off the shelf put a piece of paper in it that says hook up tot the ebrake and say it's for a manual. I know AutoPage and even some of the Cliffords do take more steps for manuals.

Heh... thanks for the story to back up my suspicion. I kinda thought that is what an autostart on a manual would be like. LOL (sorry to laugh at such a destructive story!)

So this leads me wonder what a reasonable price for remote locks w/ or without alarm?!? Sounds like you know a bit about these things EExA. I'm looking for a solid system, but my needs are *quite* basic. Any recommendations?

thanks

I think most of the local shops around here (AZ) arun about $125 to $150 for a keyless installed and about $175 to $225 for an alarm with a keyless.

When I had the shop/ installing my prices broke down like this:
Keyless unit (Cost $35) Sold for $75 Installed on most cars for $105

Alarm unit (cost $65) Sold for $110 Install with Starter kill, lights and shock sensor most cars $200 (Door locks add $55, Window control $90 per pair up or down I made a killing off these in SUV's 4 doors up and down($280) even did a few bronco's with the rear window up and down($370))

Remote start Unit cost $65 sold for $120 installed most cars $225 (Just the starter)

Heres the brake down of how most installers get paid
50% of labor
So say you get a good alarm, remote start with keyless Whole thing installed out the door for $500 shop costs and profit come out the rest is labor. So a $500 alarm is really $100 in parts $100 in product profit, $300 in labor. The installer makes $150 for putting it in your car. The shop 'collects the other $150 as labor profit. (Thats always ____ed me off I paid 65% labor and myself 75% labor) So the shops investment of $100 for parts turns the shop $250 profit for the installers work, though overhead and all does account for it.

Thanks EExA for the details and info. I have never done this before and I feel I should let the pros handle it. I did get a quote for the 563T installed for $400. This is aalarm, keyless and remote start. I guess that falls in your breakup of the 100+100+300. Could any please tell me if this is a fair price I live in Melbourne, FL. Does any body know of a god place in Orlando.

Default aftermarket keyless entry

Can I use an aftermarket remote on a new 2005 Scion xa that has no alarm or had a remote before? I don't want an alarm, just keyless remote. Thanks

The scion keyless requires a module that the dealer has. Thats part of the price they charge for the keyless.

I called around to Best Buy, Tweeter and Circuit City. I ended up with an Audiovox? simple plain keyless entry for 120.00 including installation at Best Buy.

Thanks for your help. I just had no idea where to even begin looking.
