Bazooka - easy to remove? As opposed to hidden sub
Hi there. Audio ICE-noob here with a question about the Bazooka subwoofer.
I reeeeally want to pick one up with my tax return, so I have a question for those of you who've purchased one - I hear it's easy to remove, but how easy? Like, ten seconds easy? Or, like, "you only have to remove these 12 wires" easy?
I ask because I carry large cargo aaaalllllll the time, and I need something I can pop off and stow in the rear footwells when I fold the seats down. My xB pretends it's a pickup truck at least once a week, so I want something that's going to be easy to pop out and stow.
ScionPartsPeople has them for $100...I'm trying to decide if it's worth the extra $200 to have the mounting made for a sub to hide in the spare tire.
Thanks for the help, peeps...the search function brought up basically every thread on this board.
(BTW, i'm debating only replacing the head unit and adding a sub...that sound good to youse guyses?)
THANKS

I've heard it's pretty easy to pull.
I did one better. Got an Infinity Basslink off Craigslist for $75, it tucks right under the passenger seat so there's absolutely zero loss in cargo capacity.

If you have a stock head unit the bazooka just plugs right into the back, really easy. The cable runs between the back seat and the spare tire lid then goes under the seat and from there I don't know. The bad thing about the bazooka is you have to do something special if you plan on using it with an aftermarket head unit because it has the different wire harness. So if you just want to have a fair amount of bass and being easy to remove, the bazooka is great, but if you want shake your car bass, something else would be needed.
Not exactly true about having to do anything different if you have an aftermarket headunit. I also purchased one from the Scion site he mentioned.. I had a Head unit wire adapter that plugs directly into my old Scion cable and then I wire it to the adapter that came out of my cd player (Just like any other head unit install) The bazooka plug will plug right into the scion stock connector, and then your head unit connect plugs into the bazooka tube connector. (basically just like an adapter) All works well, and no problems at all!

I'm not sure what adapter you mean.. I tried to be clear in what I meant. You know how you have to buy a wiring harness for aftermarket cd players so you don't have to cut factory wires? That's what I meant. The bazooka tube from the scion link above comes ready. You just plug it into your factory wiring, then plug your aftermarket cd players wiring harness (in which the end has a factory end since you are using a car specific wiring harness)
Thanks to everyone who has weighed in (especially to Burst for the CG link). I am a total 100% audio noob (today I had to look up what an "amp" was, lol) so I appreciate the help.
I think I'm leaning away from the Bazooka, even though it's a great price.....removing it seems like a lot of work for something I'd be doing once or twice a week. I would be eternally grateful if anybody's got pics handy...
Burst, the under-seat option is a great one, but I'm currently installing cold cathode bars.
Also that's where my CD's live. Still, that sub is currently Plan C.
Ideally (Plan A), the sub would be spare-mounted, or hide in the smuggler's bay. I'm still working with Crutchfield to see if one of their powered subs will fit in the little storage area next to the spare tire...
So far, the only spare I've found is this: http://www.freewebs.com/uber-stealth/scion.htm Seems a little ridiculous to spend $140 on just the box when I can get the entire Bazooka for like $90.
As for the HU: I'm buying an aftermarket HU with a pre-amp outlet... I'm thinking that if I get a powered subwoofer, that should be alright. ( http://www.crutchfield.com/p_020CZ30...w&rvm=ShowAllt )
Again, I really appreciate all the help...I'm doing my best here
THANKS, SCION FAMILY

Why do people keep putting amps in hot places? Amps get really hot which is why the entire case is a heat sink. I know you want to hide it so no one knows it's there to steal but you over heat them when you enclose them in places like that.

Robots or no: based on your unhappy response, I'm assuming that's a bad idea...and I can't really justified the ludicrous cost (for an inferior sub) of the in-spare subwoofer. Thus: I believe I'm going the bazooka route.
thanks for the input :D Now I just have to figure out what the hell I'm doing with the HU!
Oh, I was just kidding around...I meant "figure out what the hell I'm doing" in the sense of "install it without setting myself or the car on fire."
The head unit I'm looking at has a pre-amp outlet so I'm pretty sure it's fine.
This is the one in question:

Assuming I'm not totally confused about what a pre-amp outlet is, this should be appropriate. (The HU has a seperate sub volume, so I'm assuming it's set up for plug-and-play subs.
I'm debating setting the Bazooka up according to instructions, and getting one of those $60 Install Vouchers from Crutchfield so the installer will hook up the new HU to the sub.
Does that make me kind of a d-bag?

The pre amp output are the two coaxial looking (red and white in the link you sent) cable that come out of the back of the head unit right? Because the bazooka doesn't use that...

As you can see from the picture in the link, the factory radio has a harness that goes to the bazooka (don't remember which spot it plugs into). Oh, and even though that's the upgraded premium radio from the first gens, the back is the same on all the scion radios.
