id suggest you just get a bluetooth headset. so much easier and you can carry it around with you and bluetooth range is 30ft. you can pick up a bluetooth headset from BestBuy.

Thanks-Sorry I did not know it by it's name.

Yeah I've seen one. My buddy has one in his '99 cougar. He loves it and recommends it to everyone.

My dad has a Prius, which has optional bluetooth integration and it's great - when the phone rings, you can see the number and pick it up from the wheel buttons or the touchscreen. It mutes the music, plays through the car speakers and there is a mic somewhere. For those of us less fortunate, Bluetooth headsets are pretty good and very cheap. The other upside is if someone calls you and you don't want your passengers listening in, a car kit is out. Europe has been Bluetooth crazy for a long time, so there are other kits out there. For those of you with lots of cash but a GSM phone, Nokia makes some cool kits that I think run about $400. You can find them on their web page. Some company called Parrot also makes a plugin kit. I think I'm holding out for something that integrates well with the existing stereo. I want something with a screen for control plus the ability to mute the music and a built in mic. That Verizon box might be cool, but the webpage tells you almost nothing.

After I wrote that last post I started looking around, and Parrot (www.parrot.biz) sells a bunch of different kits, from a portable thing that plugs into your lighter to whole replacement head units. Anyway, the one that looks good to me is the CK3100 LCD - it installs a box somewhere and has an LCD screen that you can see info like caller, signal strength, etc. It also has pickup and hangup buttons on it and it looks like people are selling it for just over $200 - not great, but not that much either. Take a look:

That is what I have installed in my car right now. I did it about 2 weeks ago but I haven't posted pics yet because I've been lazy. I'll post a pic here so you can see it.

BTW, to install it I had to purchase a wire harness from some British company and it cost me $30 bucks shipped + I paid $159 shipped for the Parrot CK3100 so, all in all, about $200 and I installed it in less than 20 minutes.

What does the install consist of? Where did you hide the "brains" box? It looks like it fits in that space pretty well - is it just sitting in there or is it screwed in? Did you consider any alternate locations? That looks pretty good, considering the options.

Basically, the wiring harness I bought plugs into the two plugs that go in the back of the radio and then splits into three more wires: one to the back of the radio and two to the box that controls your bluetooth (the Parrot one).

I put the "brain" box behind the radio stuck to the white plastick thing with double-sided tape. I also used velcro (with adjesive on the back) to velcro the LCD in place. You could use double-sided tape, if you want, but I wanted it to be removable in case I want to use that space for something.

I thought of putting it where the switches for things like foglights or interior lights usually go (to the left of the steering column) but I figured I wouldn't be able to see the screen much there because of the steering wheel. I like where I put it because it's shaded so the sun doesn't make it hard to see like the radio is sometimes.

Interesting - any idea if other companies (like Pioneer) might come out with something like that? As I understand it, it's the bluetooth device, a microphone to talk into, and something to interface it into the head unit - I wonder how possible it would be for them to make it work with units already on the market... I'd love it if I could buy an AVIC-D2 now (which is my plan) and add Bluetooth to it later for a couple hundred bucks.

Thanks for doing the work for me - I thought they didn't exist so I didn't look - it truth, they do exist, but only for the AVIC-Z1 (which already costs a few grand) and a few other heads that I've never heard of but wasn't considering... it sounds like they're probably not going to retroactively upgrade the older units with this functionality... I suppose I'll live.

I just found out if you check out Pioneer's page on it, it says that the AVIC-D2 is specifically not Bluetooth ready, so I gues that means they're not going to add it later. It also notes that the iPod adapter and Sirius adapter, which do exist, both are seen as unexpected devices and as such are a bit limited in what they can display... now I'm torn... I can find D2s for like $900 on eBay, which is a ton of money already, but I'd like to get something just a little smarter... I don't think anything exists in that bracket though - lower price and higher features... ugh...
