Default FACTORY iPod setup on a 2005 xB

I was at my dealership last night getting my oil changed (they keep doing it for free.. LOL) and I went up to ask about the iPod interface when it was being worked on.

The Scion sales person gave me a QUOTE of $265 (plus tax) to put the iPod option in my 2005. I was made to believe it would work with no trouble on my 2005 head unit with no problems. I also SPECIFICALLY ASKED if the whole center console would be replaced to put in an '06 console with the ipod connector punchout and the AUX port, she said YES. I ALSO asked what the install cost is, and she said that it is INCLUDED in the $265.

I know there are other iPod threads, but they are each covering a small part of the install, and i think it would be more beneficial to have all of the Q&A in ONE place....

Can anyone confirm wether or not the FACTORY SCION iPod option will work with a 2005 head unit? (please limit responses to the FACTORY setup, not FM transmittors, or 3rd party kits.)

can anyone with a 2006 xB post a picture of their factory iPod setup, (with & without iPod connected). I would like to see what the ACTUAL iPod connector in the center console looks like. Unfortunatly, they didn't have one on hand that I could see.

Last, is there a cable SUPPLIED to connect the iPod to the jack in the center console, or do you have to purchase that separatly?

Thank you all in advance.

no the option wont work for the factory standard HU. unless they are just connecting it through the AUX port, which isn't what you seem to want.

the cable is supplied because nobody else uses that type of iPod connection.

the fact that there are doing all this for you for that cheap is crazy!

thanks for the reply.... I wasn't thinking it would work with the factory stock (NON 5-disc changer) 2005 HU. There is an AUX input in that head unit though?

I am HOPING that they will do it that cheap... Somehow, I really doubt it thought... I have been thinking... previously, this SAME DEALERSHIP would NOT allow me to purchase a TRD shifter WITHOUT having them install it... The price was ABOVE $500.... For a $150 shifter, that I installed myself in about 20 minutes. I am going to call some other local dealerships to see if they say how much it would be... IDEALLY, I would like to do the install myself, cause I would take my time to ensure it gets done properly, and looks good. Not saying that the dealership wouldn't, just that they couldn't care how it looks as long as it works.

what i am weary about is that $265 is how much it cost to get a new 06 ordered with the iPod HU already in it. no way would a normal dealership let it cost that much to install it on an 05 AND give you the new center console area.

FYI - for tCs, to get the iPod HU installed in an 05 has been upwards of $500/$1k from the dealer....

True words...I asked the dealer when I got my 06 and was told this is how it works. The 05 HU will not connect to the iPod upgrade connection. The stock 06 HU will not connect to the iPod upgrade connection. The iPod connection is already mounted in the center console of the 06 but the feed to the HU is not. When the upgrade is done the dealer changes out the HU and adds the feed from the headunit to the center console connector. They include a line cord to connect the iPod to the center console and give you a new users manual.

The only way you can make it work with the center console on an 05 is to purchase the upgraded head unit, wire feed from HU to center console, the center console and the connector cable from someone who has an 06 and is willing to part with it.

A second option is to have the dock connector (the one in the center console) mounted in the small square on the dash above the glove box and pencil cup. (that's what I call it anyway.

Hope this helps clear things up. Sorry to say the bottom line is the 05 won't work unless you change out everything. I have the iPod upgrade and I don't think it is worth what you would pay for the parts.

Try this for your 05 xB. $179 and you won't be sorry. It's clean, fast, and easy.

okay heres a cheaper way to do it

buy the aux input adapter or ipod adapter online for 65-80.00 it attaches to the radio in the back painlessly either fish the cable for the ipod out or do what i did and go to radio shack purchase a stereo plug extention and then solder an input jack together and mount it on a blank rocker panel (like were the foglight switch goes) took me no more then 1 hour to do it look really clean and is universal with all mp3 players just plug in press the cd button twice and your good to go. pm me if you got anyquestions, gonna get around to posting photos soon

It doesn't work in the same way the factory upgrade does. It will treat the first six playlists on your iPod as six CDs in a CD changer. You have to browse the tracks by hitting track up and track down, you will not be able to scroll through the list and find a specific playlist or file.

Depends on what you want. you pay more $$ for the more seamless integration.

I personally am considering Alpine's new FullSpeed connection- for the $349 the head unit costs, the ipod integration is included and all it needs is a $20 cable. If you're willing to change out your head unit, getting a new headunit and aftermarket connection that allows full access may be a better investment.

I think I am going to order Pioneer's new P7800MP and the ipod controller, plus satellite radio. It's going to be a nice setup, about $500 total, and more functional than what I would get paying $700 for the factory ipod upgrade from the dealer.
