Default Factory subwoofer owners please help

I was just wondering if anyone could measure and let me know how much space the factory sub takes up in the hatch? I'm specifically wondering what the width is on top measured from the edge to the inner lip of the hatch.

Mine is 6 inches at the top, and 6.75 inches at the thickest point, which is down further on the back edge (on the hatch side).

The pic below was taken when the box was loose., so that plus the angles make the measurements look wierd. But it gives you an idea of where I measured it.

So does the Sub help much, what kind of components are in it(brand)? Would it be easy to pull the speaker and amp to replace them with better pieces? I'd like a sub in mine, but I still want to be able to use the trunk...so if it's sound is only so-so, but is easy to pull apart, then I'll give it a try

Edit - I just looked and found it is a Bazooka unit...but does it sound okay?

Sounds decent for a factory setup... made the system sound a LOT better. I am thinking of taking out the amp and sealing it up a bit better, then adding a better 10 and a good amp. If it sounds good, it will be great, having a nice sub with a factory enclosure. If not, I may just make a fiberglass box this summer. But overall I think it sounds really good with the stock system (for stock). It has a Bazooka sub... cheap, but at only 100W it sounds good enough for now.

Don't waste your money. Take the $495 you are going to pay for it, get a nice amp, two 10's and a custom box. Will sound much better then the stock sub unit. I don't like mine much!!!

Thing is, once I decide to upgrade the sound system, I would not think of only spending 500 on two 10s, a box, an amp, and all the cabling. That would be skimping on a custom system IMO. Even with builing my own fiberglass enclosure, I would expect to spend more than that if I am going to the trouble of installing all custom stuff. I plan on dumping more money into performance during the first year or so than on sound, so I opted for the factory sub. Later, I will customize the entire system completely, and take my time and money on it. So it depends on the persons plans. And for people who just want decent sound from a factory system, going out and adding two 10s , amp and a custom enclosure is a waste of money (and space, which is a concern among some of the posters here). I will definitely go bigger later (as I have in all my cars). But for decent factory sound, it does fine.

would that take up the same space in the trunk??!!? sure, there is always a bigger fish, but where do you stop? get it for $300 and DIY if you wanna save money. follow jasonh's guide and all shall be well.

this has been beaten to death like everything else on this forum...
But what hasn't been beaten to death is the question of adding a new sub to the old box.

Has anyone done this or know enough about subs/boxes to say whether this would be effective?

if you find a driver that works in the same enclosure volume with a similar sized reflex port then assuming the bazooka dirver isn't some weird 0.25 ohm driver then should work ;)

I personally got the sub because I need the space in the back for hauling stuff for work (computers and such)....the sub takes up very little room...it sounds great.
