Default Head unit / dash removal photos (new link)

I finally worked up the nerve to pull the center dash apart and remove the stock head unit (kinda hard to finish the Bazooka harness experiment otherwise). I took some photos and measurements for our collective reference.

The main chassis of the stock head unit is 6" deep by 2 15/16" high by 7" wide. With the faceplate included it measures 6 3/4" deep (max.) by 8 1/32" wide.

There are four rectangular sockets in back (not counting the antenna connector). One is a ten-pin socket that mates with a blue connector, and the other is a six-pin socket that mates with a white connector. The other two have something to do with the XM tuner, I guess.

Oh, and center dash removal is trivial. Just remove the three climate-control ***** (pull right off) and remove the two screws behind them. Then grab hold around the two center eyeball vents and pull firmly yet carefully.

Photo album on my Web site at:

EDIT: Due to problems with my hosting provider I have mirrored the photos temporarily at ImageStation:

The theory is $40 wiring harness + $80 Bazooka powered bass tube = $350 factory option.

Gotcha.. saw your Q on power supply.

Doesn't it draw power and signal from the HU? That's what I always thought.

What is the heighth of the headunit (faceplate)? I am trying to figure out if a 9" widescreen will fit or if it will have to be an 8". Thanks in advance.

The faceplate is the same height as the chassis itself -- about 2 15/16"

Ahhhh sooo...I've been dying to swap my singled disc with a six disc unit for awhile now. I am looking forward to seeing your install pics. If you have a few JPEGS I could host on my webspace I'd be more than happy to. PM me if you like.

Anyways, looking forward to the step-by-step pix! Thanks!

Great post! How do you get to those knock outs? I was experimenting with taking the dash out and it seems like both the trio of knockouts underneath the center console and the one knock out above the glove compartment are in seperate chambers.

I'd like to install an FM Modulator and put the switch and connectors in the knock out above the glove. Any thoughts?

Thanks.

Easiest way to get to those three knockouts is to remove the glove compartment. There are two plastic stops, one on either side. Push in on one side until the stop clears the dash, repeat on the other side and the glove compartment should lift right off the hinges. You'll see an opening large enough to reach around behind the knockouts.

If you want to do anything more involved, the lower center console pulls out w/o a struggle once the upper part has been removed.

i don't think the 8" screens will fit, i just picked up a 7" widecreen lilliput with touchscreen, and it looks like it will just fit, with a tiny bit of extra space all around - the 8" one's would require some cutting of the factory bezel assy. i think.

Hey man, I wouldn't recomend running your sub off the decks power supply. I have installed quite a few systems into various vehicles of mine and my friends and the one thing you never want to skimp on is how much power you feed your subs! It's not that much harded to run it off the battery. Just Run the power cable through an existing hole or gromit in your firewall. Piece of cake. Won't take you more than 15 minutes and it will make your system sound 100 times better!
