It's huge compared to the ones on the market. Don't understand why someone couldn't make one like this but out of molded plastic and have it mount to the floor. I LOVE the one I made using bruenor's plans

Not bad, not bad at all. Did you mention how much time it took? If so, I must have missed it...

With the right tools about 2-3 hrs if you have all the stuff. Plywood 1/4",small nails/tacks,a hinge for the lid, spray adheasive, black cloth to match the seats, some foam for the lid padding and some self tapping screws to mount it to the center tunnel behind the rear cupholder.

Default Personally Engineered Armrest

Great job. More storage is always nice. Rather than handmade, perhaps "personally engineered" sounds so much better. Congratulations!

Looks very nice...One thing though...How strong is the wire holding it n place? If you're ever in an accident that thing may become one hell of a missile.

Yeah, I don't care for the material, but your design is
EXACTLY what I was thinking of making. Two cup holders
in the back was part of my design too!

I just don't think I'd pull it off that well, and I didn't wan't
my box to look ghetto.

Yours came out really well!

Actually it is not covered in carpet. It's covered in black material, but try to get something that will not fuzz ball. As long as it is black it will match perfect. The camera makes it look different but in person it matches real nice.

This may sound like I'm just plain stupid but I am looking at your plans and reading the description but I still don't see how the G pieces and the A piece work in there. Can you maybe draw up similar plans with the pieces sort of put together (if that makes sense). If you don't have time or don't want to don't worry I'll try to figure it out when I have more sleep.

I ran into the same problem with some of the peices. Just disregard pcs A,C and G and make 3 pcs. in these sizes... 4"x3 1/2" , 5"x3 1/2" and 4 1/2x3 1/2" these will be used for the 3 bottom pcs and once you strat to lay all the pcs. out they will make sense. Remember the lid, front and rear panels don't go between the sides but the 3 bottom pcs. do. you'll see. Have fun, I did. I'm very satisfied with mine and very glad I made it.

Mine looks just like the one in the pictures, but I made mine a bit shorter because of my long arms, it was too high and uncomfortable. Make measurements of how high you need it and adjust the plans accordingly. Just don't take too much off the bottom or it won't clear the cupholder.

I'm going to be honest with you, my grandma with arthritis could make a better armrest than that...i don't know if i'm just used to better looking fabrication but i don't think it looks very good at all. I'd try to do some molding or fiberglassing to give it a smoother look instead of just using felt, maybe add a little bit more padding to the top

Oh Well. Everyone that sees it, likes it and it serves the purpose of an armrest and extra storage and looks like it came from the factory. To each their own.
Best of all the money I saved by doing it myself allowed me to spend $'s on other mods.

Thanks for the comments. I keep forgetting how much extra storage space is in there. LOL

I took measurements of mine and here all the outside dimensions. BUT, You can play with the overall size to fit YOU If you want. The only sizes that are very important is the overall width. You can make the lid overhang as much as you like.
The 2 side pieces need to be made to these and the back and bottom pieces are made to go in between the sides so they are slightly smaller to fit. The lid can be made as long as you need because it overhangs the front edge some.
If you use 1/4 inch plywood here is the sizes of the 3 bottom pieces.
1.very bottom which is the last piece tacked in is 3-1/2"X 4-1/2"
2.front of the bottom section piece that stands vertical 3-1/2"X5"
3. other bottom piece that sits over the rear cup holder 3-1/2"X4-3/4"
If you tack #3 into the top edge #2 to form an L shape it will be easier cause you can't do it after you start assembling it.
The front wall sizes are 12" X 3-1/2"
The rear wall is 17"X 3-1/2"
All the pieces go between the main sides and it makes it plenty strong. After mine was done it was strong enough to stand on.
The last piece that goes in is the very bottom piece and gets tacked on all 4 sides because this is where it gets screwed to the top of the hump directly behind the stock console/rear cup holder. I pre-drilled 2 holes in the bottom piece so when I mounted the armrest I only had to run the self drilling screws down into the hump. The holes need to be large enough so the screws pass through cleanly for final installation.
I used a door hinge so it would be strong and mounted the lid prior to covering it so it would be hidden.
It seems hard but if you can make stuff with wood it should be easy. You'll see how it goes together after all the pieces are cut. I used small tacks that were about 1/2" long to assemble it. I went to walmart and got some black fabric to cover it with spray on adhesive. Take a headrest with you to match the fabric to the seats.
To keep the lid closed I took a small piece of leftover wood and made a small piece that fits inside and mounted it under the lid for resistance
Total time was a few hours and cost wise it was less than 30 bucks I believe total.
PM me with questions if you need help and have fun DIY.

I'm waiting for photobucket to load for installed pics.
