Default Monitor

Can anyone give me an explination for this.

I recently purchased a raw lcd monitor. It has a power/ground wire and an RCA wire coming from it. Initially I hooked the power wire to the cig lighter and turn my car on and guess what? Nothing!!!

Why could this be? I know I had the correct wire. as well. My neons and LEDS are hooked up to the cig.

Since I had my steering wheel column off I figured I would use one of the thick power wires in there to try. I tapped into the blue/red ACC wire which looks to be 12gauge. The monitor worked. Yet after a min or two I then noticed my monitor starting to smoke. haha

Could this be because the wires from the monitor are about 18 gauge and the wires in the steering harness is 12gauge and it can't handle the current? Im afraid to hook it up to that wire now.

did you ground the monitor at the cig lighter also? or somewhere else? the larger gauge wire wouldn't fry the monitor.

^^^ No you dont, i have seen his work. Just kidding, he does great work, i got some pics of his Mazda 6 he did, it was sweet. But back on subject, since its a raw monitor maybe it was dust that had settled on the board or somthing that caused the smoke. Because like Violent b said that heavy guage wire shouldn't have caused it to smoke. As for the ground try an actual chassis ground, Toyota is not well known for there grounds, especially in our cars.

haha yea the smoke scared me. I didn't see why this would be an issue. 12v is 12v to me.

What is wierder is that I grounded it to the same ground spot. Just used a different power wire.
