Default Mounting to the roof (Kenwood Music Keg)

I'm going to buy the Kenwood Music Keg real soon and just got a great idea where to mount it.

I think it would be cool to mount it to the roof of my xB. Right above and between the driver and passenger seats. Has anyone ever done this or know anything about mounting anything up there? I've never took the headliner down, so I don't know what's up there to mount to.

There's sheet metal skin and little ribs that run from right to left.

Thanks I found a pic.

From the looks of those ribs all I would need to do is fab up a bracket that screws into those ribs.

I was thinking about adding this to my DDX. How big is the docking station for the Keg. It looks like it would be something like 6"x8" Is that about right? Also, would it be possible to fit it in the console section above the ashtray?

dang..2 posts in a row about doin similar things...
currently got my keg sitting in the cubby container in the back.. next to the spare... out of site out of mind for thieves right???
have thought about putting in the spot under the ac controlls but would have to cut lots of the plastic off in the back.. and shave the sides of my keg to make it fit nice(i got older model looks more like a small amp/different than the above pic) also would have about 5+ft of cable to bundle up under the dash if you put in that spot, can u get a shorter cable for it?? dunno. and depending on how u mount it.. another inch or so sticking out(data cartridge) from the console and possibly affecting your shifting...
not sure bout the roof idea.. but its interesting...would like to see how it looks if/when ya do it...
good luck

I would actually recommend Rockford Fosgates Omni-Fi system...the keg is kinda hard to go through all your music because there isnt a display of what you are looking at and basically have to go through each song one by one...the omnifi has a seperate controller...the omnifi also has wireless capabilities and you can send your files straight to your car without taking the hard drive inside and hookin everything up
check it out:

hmm.. not 100% sure... but i think if used in conjucntion with a video screen.. you can see what folders/songs you have with the keg... plus the keg has voice tagging will read off of the names of folders you have set up...think it'll read songs too if ya select that option...
tho i will concede the point of having to pull the cartridge out and hooking it up to your pc can be a pain... specially if ya update your collection several time a week...or what not

Werd. I already have the Kenwood DDX 7015, so that's no problem.

Same setup here....Does it look like the docking station for the keg will fit in the compartment above the ashtray? If so, I have to find a new place for the DDX remote.

You mean the flip-down compartment? I'm not sure. From the looks of the Keg it looks like it won't, but then again I've never seen one in person, so I can't tell you.

the keg should fit in the compartment above the ash try.... me and a friend slid mine in to see if it would fit...to make it sit back far enuff to not interfere with the shifter... you do need to do some chopping of the plastic in the back of the cubby hole.... and like i sed...my keg looks different/bit wider(mounting screw rails) than the one pic'd above... so i'd have to shave a bit on either side to make it fit "nice" and smooth

You probably have the Kenwood Excelon Music Keg, am I right?

I think it would look pretty damn sweet mounted on the ceiling. It would also be well out of the way, wouldn't get accidentally knocked about or have stuff spilled on it... and it would be super accessible. Fabbing a bracket shouldn't be too hard... I think the only crappy part would be running the wiring.. but hell, even that shouldn't be too hard.

And just a quick question... cuz I'm seriously considering getting a keg once i get working on my system... can you get extra cartridges for it? I'd like to do the roof mounting(sorry to steal your idea)... and then fab a cartridge rack to hold various different cartridges for different moods and such.

Yeah that's most of the reasons I wanted to mount up there. Because our ceilings are high anyway! But yeah you can buy more cartridges for it. You can get them in 40, 60 and 80 GB sizes. PhatNoise is the company that makes it. Check em out here:

Yeah... i have the eXcelon music keg....got mine in 2003... so between then and now the "look" has been revised a bit...

yeah you can get extra cartridges for it.... www.phatnoise.com makes the keg... and think you can get up to an 80gig cartridge for it now... but that'll run about 300-400$ last i looked.... guessin you'll probably get the 20gig cartridge with the one your gonna buy... i got the 10gig.... and just got it filled up...i think you can put several hundred different folders on each cartridge to suit your music mood... so ya dont need different "mood cartridges" unless ya got like 10-20thousand songs for each mood....but the theft reason...is good enuff too....

Well, I have about 60 gigs of music... not counting all the CDs I have that I still need to rip. So extra cartridges would be nice... or I could just buy one 80 gig cartridge...

I'll probably get the Kenwood, not the Kenwood Excelon, mainly due to price.

Anyways... back to the discussion of mounting it on the roof... if anyone does it pics of the installation would be sweet just to give everyone an idea of how to do it.
