Default Please help me locate how I fried my amp.. twice

Ill try to give my best description of my setup so we can try to figure out why my amp started smoking/ fry (i sent it in for repair, got it back yesterday, and it did the same thing).

So what i have is the vibe 246

* 2 x 300W RMS at 4 OHMS 2 x 600W MAX at 4 OHMS
* 1 x 1200W MAX at 4 OHMS Bridged 2 x 500W at 2 OHMS RMS
* Electronic Crossover Network
* Bass Boost Circuit
* 2 Ohms Stereo Stable
* Anti-Thump Turn-On
* Illuminated Top Panel
* Soft Turn On/Off
* High & Low Level Inputs
* Power & Protection LED Indicators
* Advanced Protection Circuitry
* Remote Control Bass Booster
* THD: <0.04%
* S/N Ratio: >90dB
* Channel Separation: >65dB
* Freq. Response: 15Hz~35kHz
* Dimensions: 11.06''W x 2.24''H x 13.5''L

and 2 Audiobahn AW1051T

*Dual 4 Ohm 300 Watts RMS

I have a Rockford amp kit (4 gauge) with a 100
amp fuse. On the amp itself is a 30 amp fuse.
Inside the sub box on each sub i have a wire going from the pos to neg.
I have the positive wire from each sub coming out of the box twisted together and in the same place in the amp, and have the two negative wires from the subs twisted together and in the correct place in the amp.

If theres any more information you need to help locate where I went wrong, causing it to smoke immensely and die, tell me. And is it possible that the amp was faulty to begin with and that even after they replaced whatever in the amp that it is still faulty? Im just trying to decide what to do next, i.e. if i should call the company and do something about it.

you are underloading the amp, (as you described) you are running all 4 voice coils in parallel and that halves the resistance for every 2 voice coils. So 4 ohms x4 equates to 4/4, which is 1ohm. I doubt that your amp is 1 ohm stable, so it over heated due to being underloaded (not enough resistance).

You'll need to run them in a Series-Parallel configuration. Wire the positives of the 2 voice coils on each speaker in parallel (+ to + & - to -) and then wire the subs in Series (+ to -) to get a total 4 ohm load. Based on your amp specs there, that sure be about 1200W peak.

Good luck.

heres a simple yet logical question, did you try turning on the amp before putting the subs on it?? Just to make sure the amp turns on and stays on with no problem.

I had something similar to this happen to me, I put a 1.33ohm load on a 4ohm stable amp..but it did not smoke it just blew the fuse.

Sparky does make a good point make sure you don't underload your amp..do what he says to get the 4ohm load. Or you will get a blown fuse like i did, or in your case smoke...The smoke could have came out of blown resistors inside the amp or one of the transistors..

Anywayz good luck.

The amp does power up, the cathode tube on the outside lights up and stays lit. But no signal is being sent to the subs anymore. And ive checked the fuses (the first time) but maybe should go look at it again to see if they blew this time. But with my luck they didnt blow and the same damn thing happend (ie. smoke poured out and it needs repair). I will definately wire it that way, and that should be cake, just an extra 5 min. Thanks for the help. Now i just hope that the company will repair it just once more..
