GT4- I completely agree with you, i got a ticket before i got a detector, and for driving school and the cost of the ticket, it was $300 (20 miles over the limit). Luckily, it was my first offense, so I was able to take driving school and get it off my record so that my insurance didnt get jacked up. The way i figure it, if a radar detector saves you from 2 tickets, it pays for itself.
don't settle for cheap radar detectors man. buying those expensive ones will save you money in the long run. i provided a link that tests out the most popular detectors out there. read thru it and it will help you out in choosing one. i personally have the escort 8500 x50 and it works great.

I seriously need one of these too. Just got my first speeding ticket yesterday. I was going 46 in a 25mph school zone. It sucks cause next week it would have been a year since I got my liscence, and I heard that if you go a year w/out tickets or accidents, ur insurance goes down... bummer!

Escort Solo S2. Its cordless and awesome. Everytime it goes off there is a cop around if you don't see him you will in a mile or two down the road. Plus its upgradable. If new radar comes out all they have to do is reprogram it! This detector rocks!
If you buy the opt power cord it gets even better.

save up, because the cheap ones (under $300) are not always fool proof. . . they will save you MOST of the time, but I've had a couple instances where had I been speeding, I would have gotten a ticket. Save up, and get an Escort or Valentine. They will NOT fail you.
Honestly, the only way radar detectors work is if you slow down every time they go off, which if you live in a major city will be every 2 minutes. Beltronics makes the best radar detectors I've seen, and even theirs still produce false positives. You're also forgetting about laser, which is pretty much unavoidable because by the time you detect it, you're caught...

Yeah. . . I shouldn't have said never, as never say never. But the pricier models do offer a significantly larger amount of protection than the others.
I've gotten it down to a science. . . I know where my false alarm spots are, and most of the time, you will drive the same routes. If anything is different about the warning, I slow down, regardless. Even if something feels funny, I slow down. Now if I am on a route which I have never travelled, I slow down for ALL alerts. Better safe than sorry. . .

I use a Whistler 1785 ... It was cheap ,you can probobly find one for 50 bucks and it works very well. I got it right after a speeding ticket and haven't gotten one again since in the lsat year. It detects laser as well... there are 2 city modes and then a highway mode so if you can put it on city mode to block out some of the X-ban from buildings. The range is decent, not as good as some of the high priced ones but it does the trick for me, who drives between 75 and 85 on the New Jersey Turnpike
