ps2 install anybody?
i want to put my ps2 in my tc permanently or maybe xbox...xbox is kinda big though. but i have the original ps2 not the slim line one. i already have it hooked up to my screen i just need to power it somehow. i don't think i want to use a power inverter b/c i heard they zap your battery. Should i just wire it straight to my battery and if so how?
You can't wire it directly to your battery; Your car is 12v DC (Direct Current) and your PS2 requires 120v AC (Alternating Current), hence the reason for a Power inverter.
You shouldn't have any trouble "zapping" your battery with an inverter as long as the car is running if you intend to play for any reasonable length of time. I have my first gen PS2 in my glove box, but to make it fit I had to modify the power cord and AV cable attachments in the back of the unit.
Just an additional bit of info; A decent Amp for your subs would drain your battery as fast as an inverter without the car running if you decided to jam out in the parking lot for a while at high volume loads.

You could spend fourty or fifty bucks on a 160 watt power inverter. Plug it into your car's 12 volt DC cigarette lighter, and it gives you a 110 volt AC power outlet. Plug in the power adapter from Sony, and bring that 110 volt alternating current (AC) down to 8.5 volt DC. Waste a lot of power, find a place to put a bulky inverter and adapter, and drain your battery quickly.
The Solution — Smaller than a Peach
Take that 12 directly to 8.5 with minimal energy (heat) loss. Do it in a very tiny package, and for not much money.
You need a variable voltage regulator, a heat sink, heat sink compound, 2 resistors, and an optional mounting/insulating kit.

why do something permanent ?? if its for show just do it how i did it. I ran the wires through the glove box and put my dreamcast in their. I only play and use it for shows. So when the show is over i simply disconnect it (while the wires are till fished were they need to belong) and tada. Heres a pic of my little mod.

Not as nice and clean as having a direct power connection but much easier. I would prefer to use my orignal (big) PS2 since I can put a HD in it and load games on the drive using HD Loader, that way I wouldn't have to worry about having game discs in the car.

Yea, I've seen those. I just really hate having wires show for anything and I really don't like wires running from the cig lighter. I fuse and hard wire everything.... If it were me, I might buy the cig lighter version ($15 is not bad) and modify it to be direct hard wire (taking apart the giant supply side.)

Resistor is a bad idea, extremely inefficient, however a voltage regulator or xener diode will do the trick.
A xener diode u can pick up at radio shack or whatever electronics place happens to be around you.. Unfortunately its not really going to make your power clean, just keep it from spiking over a predetermined voltage. If you want something regulated (which you should) then Id go buy one of those universal voltage boxes from walmart that plugs into the cigarette lighter. Cut the cig connection off and just use the wires to your acc. Im not sure what the current draw on the slim ps2 is, but if the combined current cost with other acc items you are running is over 15 amps, you would be wise to use a relay and have the acc switch an externaly fused power line.
Incidently, the resistor setup would be a 3:4 ratio for 9 volts from the 12 volt. But remember your voltage is going going to fluctuate between 12 and 15 volts on the car, so when working with ratios of resistors, you could end up spiking up to 10.5 volts even if your resistor setup was set for 9@12 . Granted 1.5 volts isnt much, but I dont know how sensitive the ps2 is.

15/4=3.5, 3.5*3=10.5

The slimline would fit sooo nicely. Only problem is the pop-up CD drive, but someone's probably figured that out.

so back on topic. i am not going to buy a slim line ps2 just going to throw my old ps2 in there w/ harddrive. so i need an inverter? got dayum it...hmm...anybody with pics of a clean install?

buy an inverter, plug it into the inverter ...run 8 gauge wire to the battery ( like you would an amp) and your good to go
