I thought about this awhile ago but didn't get very far after my initial idea. What I invisioned was fiberglassing over my keyhole and hiding a button somewhere that would start the car thus avoiding needing the key. However someone was saying I would need to put a key in the hole and then push the button to get it to work. I figured if I have to put a key in the hole I mid as well turn it to

Ignited made a nice push button starter. Don't know if they are still around. Look into that. you could install the button near the side mirror controller and relocate the traction or dimmer to the center console.

Does anyone know how to wire a button so that you don't need your key?

Yeap.... but youd need a latching relay that clicks when you push the button. It would involve probably quite a few relays so that all the ACC, and IGN would turn on when you hit the button and then turn off when you hit it again... Also would need another relay just for the starter wire that will crank when you hit the button with possibly a pulse generator to give it a 1-2 sec pulse.

I think a good thing to do would be remote start the car then get in and hit the button and it clicks the lathcing relays on the ACCs, and IGNs.

Once all this is done you need to remove the lock in the column, not to fun but can be done. Now once you have done all this you better have an alarm on your car. You have just bypassed your steering lock and made you car very easy to start.

This would really suck trying to explain to the insurance company how your car was stolen.

You need a actual device kinda like the smart keys that lets only you start the car.

Another thing Ive done before is putting a magnetic switch somewhere hidden in the car under a panel and when you put the magnet on that spot it send the signal needed on one side of the relay and the push button will do the rest.

That sounds damn more complicated then I expected. I have seen push buttons that have a ACC and IGN switch as well.

Thats just to wire it so you wont need a key, If you use your key then its a simple relay and 1 wire to worry about.

i got a 2 stage toggle switch and a flush mount push button for my push button starter setup. The only reason that my setup is not installed yet is because of that damn steering wheel lock. That lock is by far the sturdiest thing on the whole car. the switch i got is really neat. it flips up with two stops. the first stop is where you will connect all the acc wires, then step two is where you will connect the run. then the button is just wired to the start. i have one of those cool little red switch covers that keeps the switch off and flips it all off if it was on. but that stupid steering wheel lock is still in the way. and dont forget to have an alarm installed at least that gives you a bit of protection from someone just opening your car and starting it up. i also plan on putting in some sort of other type of thief stopper thing, havnt decided yet, but it would be something i could opt out of using if i just left it alone. these are just my ideas any feed back would be appreciated, im planning on getting this going very soon, once my alarm and stereo are done

Good question. Im not even sure what to search for on google.

Although some places call it a "smart key"

You're gonna need the key reguardless. Don't for forget about the steering wheel lock. The cylinder has to be in acc for the wheel to turn.

You wont need a key if you go with the pivot security starter system, you can hook it up to where it needs to key, or to where it bypass the key completely, the "security" feature of the button is that you have to press a certain of times, and maybe press it again a different amount of times before the engine will start.

People have been trying to do similar mods to what you are trying to do here for years (Like 90 years).

Here is what you are up against.

1. The wheel lock : You can beat that by taking a spare key and cutting the head off, and installing it into the ignition and turning it to the ACC position and leaving it there then cover the lock hole with some sort of dress up plate. That brings the next problem.

2. How do you turn the car on and off: It does not work like in the movies where there is just one wire that you have to supply power to and the car goes on and everything works. There are several wires that need power and they need to be switched somehow so you will need either a multi pole switch, or multiple relays to take care of this. I really liked the magnetic switch idea, you could put the contactor in the seat and carry a magnet on your pocket for that "Look it will only start for me" effect. As you might expect, this has been the biggest problem with any of these "key-less" systems.

3. Where do you put the start button, this is a mater of personal taste, but remember you want it some place you can reach, and that looks good too.

Whatever you choose to do your biggest problem will be turning the car on and off reliably and making the car secure.

Remember if you do this all your switches or relays have to be rated to the correct DC amperage or the contacts could either fail to contact, or lock up in the closed position. Either way, your car will either not start, or not shut off and I can almost guarantee that it will happen at the worst possible time.

Personally, I am not going to do the keyless option, and I'm going to stick with mounting on the carbon fiber panel about the cigarette lighter, in the cubby hole on the tC.

I'm also about to tackle this project. I have no intention of getting rid of the key though. I just want a push button start to say I have it. Turn the key to ON and then hit the button. That seems much easier to deal with than some of the above situations...
