Default Question for the amp gurus

I am going to probably go with the SPFR 12" speaker box for my xB but I am totally lost and have no clue what amp to get.

This amp says it will push 420 watts into one channel at 2ohms, my question is what are ohms and what is the difference in 2ohms and 4ohms and would this 420watts at 2ohms be enough to get this ID 12" to thump nicely or should I get something with more power.. I had a old MTX 360 watt amp bridged to 1 channel pushing 2 rockford 10's and it sounded nice so I figured I would stick with MTX if I can as it was a pretty dependable and nice sounding amp.

also can I hook this thing up to my stock unit with a converter and have it sound ok? I have heard doing it this way sometimes does not give very good sound so I am wondering if I should save for another deck, but the stocker is fine for me as it plays mp3's and its all I really need.

Thanks in advance.

Well the amp i was talking about looks like the auction is over but it was just like this one except 420 watts at 2ohms and like 200 watts at 4ohms.

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll...tem=3094090488

and the enclosure is at spfr.com and is a image dynamics 12" , I have to be totally honesy I have never heard of image dynamics but supposedly it is a good woofer and again I know basically nothing about car audio these days and am used to the mtx, alpine, jl audio and mtx names so it is new too me but it gets some good reviews here.

Thanks

I'm not sure which ID sub comes with that box, but it will probably either be a dual 2 ohm sub or dual 4 ohm sub. If i had to guess, it would probably be a dual 2 ohm sub so you could wire it at a 4 ohm mono load, at which most amps are stable into and produce the most power in bridged mode. If it is a dual 2 ohm sub, you cannot run it at 2 ohm mono. You can run it at 4 ohm mono or 1 ohm mono. 1 ohm mono is out of the question for most amps, other than high current competition amps. If its a dual 4 ohm sub, you can run your amp at 8 ohm mono or 2 ohm mono. The sub will determine the ohms (resistance), not the amp. If you haven't chosen an amp yet, your best bet is get a amp that is stable into a 4 ohm mono (bridged) load and go with the the dual 2 ohm sub, if you have a choice.

Most speaker to line level converters do not send a great deal of line level voltage to your amp, particularly because the factory head unit doesn't! In other words, you will not get the most clean power out of your amp. The difference most times is very audible. If you must stay with your factory head unit, there is the PAC adapter.

Good luck!

I would reccomend an id(q) sub that has dual 4 ohm coils for that amp. Wire the coils parallel to recieve a 2 ohm load and you should be fine. That amp does seem a little much for a single id(q) sub though. Good luck

Hey guys, I am in the same dilemma. Would this amp, below, be fine for this setup, or is it too much/too less. If this is a crappy amp can you lead me to a good one. I don't know much about amps but I heard if your amp is not good, it will make your system sound bad.

OHMs are the resistance of the speaker, the less the number the easier it is to get more power to the speaker, but most amps state how low they can go & maintain operation (Stablity). the MTX Amp is 2-Ohm stable, you could run a Dual 4-Ohm Voice Coil Speaker in Parallel (Wired Pos to Pos & Neg to Neg) which will give you a 2-Ohm total load, if it is a Dual 2-Ohm Voice Coil Speaker and it was wired the same you'd have a 1-Ohm total load, which your amp would have issues with, or you could wire it in Series (Neg to Pos) which would give you a 4-Ohm total load. For the Dual 2-Ohm you may want to run either a 1-Ohm Stable Mono Block amp, a Stereo amp or two Mono Block amps, or simply trade for a Dual 4-Ohm Voice Coil or a Single 2-Ohm Voice Coil speaker (Like the one I'm selling[/plug]) which will give you a 2-Ohm total load.

Hope this answers any questions, if not PM me about this.

Dave

I would say that amp is more of a minumum power requirement amp in my opinion. You really can't have too much power as long as you are using quality equipment. I just installed a JL Audio 10W7 in my Xb with the JL Audio 500/1 amplifier and I would say it is about a perfect match. So there is no way I would recommend less power for a 12" woofer. But, that's just my opinion. I am more af a DB Drag Racing guy so maybe my opinion of required power is clouded by being used to mass amounts of power.

Hey guys thanks a million for all the responses, I am waiting to hear back from spfr on what type of woofer it is and then from there I will figure out what amp I should go with, I think MTX most likely because they seem to be fairly inexpensive and seem to have good quality atleast from the one I had before.

Check out the link below for some good deals on amps. Very good company. They carry a lot of brands, including MTX and Image Dynamics, and they are internet authorized dealers too so you will get a warranty! Check out the sale on the Phoenix Gold amps too! Great amps and prices right now. Good luck.
