Default RS-Type Short Shifter Install.

Got around to installing this thing today. Over all job time should be less then 1 hour, for someone who knows how to use tools.

Disclamer: I am in know way responsible for any damage you do to your car.

Caution: When dealing with the retaining clips, dont use to much force. I launched the first clip all the way back into the cargo area when I first took it of, so the can spring at you.

Tools needed:

5/32" Socket, Ratchet & 6" extension along with a philips screw driver & a straight screw driver.

The Shifter before install:

Step one:

Using the Philipes Screw Driver, undo the bolt on the center console, on the back edge.

Step two:

Unscrew the shift ****.

Step three:

Using a little force on the front of the console, lift up. You are trying to pop these 2 parts out of there hole.

Step four:

Looking at the under side of the console (06 guys + fog light guys only) undo what connectors you might have, that plug into the center console.

Step five:

Using the 5/32 socket set up, undo the four bolts holding the shifter to the floor.

Step Six:

Pop off the wiring bundle from the shifter. Its mounted in 2 different places, you will be able to see what I mean when you get this far.

Step Seven:

Undo the retaining clips holding the 2 cables onto the shifter base ( dont damage these as you will need to reuse.

Step Eight:

Install the shifter in the reverse order of what you just did, to get your old one out. Now the real fun starts, getting the center mounted cable back onto the shift ball, takes a little work. You need to keep pushing on it, until it is all the way in the hole. Then reinstall the retaining clip. The first cable, is much easier to install, as it just slides onto the pivot point.
Once you get it all put together, mount the 4 bolt like things the RS-R shifter came with, to the under side of the shift base. Then just mount the thing with the 4 screws & put back together.

Some extra pics from the install.

The finished job.

You will need to figure out what you will do with the shift boot that the car comes with, the stock chrome looking ring, can not be reused. It is to small to fit onto the new shifter. I did a little work & used the stock white clip part, & wraped the shift boot around this. I then installed the shift **** down onto this set up & it does not look to bad.

First Impressions: I like the way the shifter feels. Took it for a spin right after the install. Much better now, better still a little to much side to side movement while in gear. Getting into second is no longer hard, & I find getting into reverse a little easier to.

Hope this helps some one out there & it was a great $85 spent.[/img]

Good job! You finally got your xB, huh? I'll add it to the tech section. Also..isn't it the "RS-Type" shifter..not RS-R?

Thank you, thank you. Im loving the exhaust you made. The only thing I dont, is that its not loud enough Now all you need to do, is look into a way of making a bolt up straight pipe to replace the resenator. Or maybe even a bolt up header back exhaust part

I finally added it to the tech section. I'll move it to the FAQ forum in a week or so.

You can modify the shift boot, but you have to guide the excess boot over the white cuff-stop thingamajig. Here's the shift boot mod thread: https://www.scionlife.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=38358

Yeah I ended up doing something like that, because that chrome like ring, wont slide down on the new shifter shaft. So I just placed the white part, right below the shift **** & have the shifter fabric a little above that part. So the shift **** now has a little of the shift boot under it. Dang that TWM looks like it is really short

Works and looks fine.

Here is a killer update. If you want to have almost 0 side to side movement from the RS shifter, here is what needs to be done.

The parts in green came from the RS shifter. So use the stock Toyota ones in there place. Thats all. Follow eggie's right up on how to replace the pivot point. The top mount cover, you just pry up & it pops off. So have at it, these 2 mods have made the shifter so much better, no I know for sure if I have gotten into second instead of it kicking me out because it was not all the way in

Excellent write up, it is indeed fantastic.

I do have a quick question in regards to the recent update - the shifter in the picture, is that from the RS shifter or from the stock shifter? Or are you simply *just* those two green pieces?

Thank you!

Just FYI -

The screw that holds the center console is a 10mm, or phillips screwdriver. The bolts that hold the shifter assy are 12mm.

This is an import.... they don't use American Standard sizes. Even Domestic cars don't use standard anymore. Everything is metric.

Takes 20 minutes, including goofing off time.

Ok, I've been trolling around here for the last month making small changes to my xb. I just did a SRI and now I'm looking into a shifter mod. I emailed the guy that makes the shifter bushings but I have not heard back. The RS type short shifter in this thread interests me, and I'm curious if this one on ebay is the same thing. http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/03-06...spagenameZWDVW

Sorry to bring back a dead thread, and I did try to search for more info on this. So if i missed it, I'm dumb.

Yep, that's the one. It makes a huge difference, too.
