Default RS3 aftermarket headunit question...

Ok,

Is their any AFTERMARKET headunits that work with the RS3 headrest monitors and doesnt screw them up??? As well as the steering wheel controls, because I have an amazing sound system, and I love the stock Alpine HU, but I need to go aftermarket, i just dont want to screw up my headrest monitors, and if possible, the remote controls on the steering wheel.

If I have to, i will sacrafice the steering wheel controls but I will not loose the TV's....

from what ive gathered, no one has effectively swapped one out with one that functions fully. Something about the wiring that screws with the tv's. Someone said they are wired for that headunit. I dont know. I like mine just fine.

I've been wondering about this as well because I'd love to upgrade but I don't want to lose the functionality.

I thought I had seen some posts from folks who had changed out the HU and the monitors hooked up just fine. (They are Vizualogic units). Check out this thread, and the post by TxztdXB about halfway down the first page-- he indicates he changed his HU out with no problem:

Does the factory head unit have a video plug for the video out like and RCA connection or is it an actual factory type plug with like 5 or 6 wires and pins coming out of it ?

When I saw the RS3 package I was bummed, because I love alpine and wanted the AV setup, but I am glad I didn't get one because I upgraded to the Alpine indash dvd and put in my own headrest moniters and it turned out great. You would think you could make the factory set-up work with an aftermarkedt HU???

Good luck.

i have actually seen some HUs that (w/ some splicing) can still use the steering wheel controls. Tons come w/ as goog or better ipod connectivity than stock. The trick is to find one with all these features AND compatibility w/ the monitors. Think its gonna be a hard find

I believe it does. I know the headrests run to a S-video cable. And you can run another source to the Headunit like a PS2 to play it on the screens

Im about to go aftermarket for the headunit, have ANY RS3 owners done this? And if so, how did it go? I want to know if any RS3 owners have switched out the stock Alpine and have successfully gotten the headrests AND the steering wheel controls to work...

I swapped mine out three days after I got the car. That has been a year ago this month. I"m just running a cheap jensen flip out I got at wal-mart and it works fine with the headrest monitors. You do loose the steering wheel controls but with most aftermarket headunits you can get an adaptor to fix that. You also loose your wireless earphones, unless you want to do some rewiring, I didnt and I don't really miss either one of those.

here is a pic of the back of the alpine unit to show that it does use RCA for video and has inputs for another device.

So is their anything special you had to do to get the TV's to work??? Or is it just plug and play with other aftermarket headunits...

no nothing special, just plug the rca from the monitors into the video output on your new headunit.

I installed an alpine flip out in my wife's RS 3.0. No problems. The problem is the
power supply for the monitors is defective. Ours went out in the first 6 month of
ownership. The dealer replaced it, then I put the new stereo in. I've had it in for six
months with no problems. The head unit is not to blame.
