Default Scosche/EFX xB custom-fit box sub upgrade - max sub depth?

I've just gotten the Scosche/EFX custom-fit box with preloaded 10" woofer (if you're looking for it, try Crutchfield), and now realize that I want to put a higher-quality woofer in there to replace the EFX 10". The box itself is great - flush, looks as stock as you could want, but the sub isn't very high quality, and misses the lowest of bass notes (ex: Busta Rhymes' 'Touch It' low note is nonexistent).

Does anyone here have experience replacing it with a high-end 10" sub? What is the MAX DEPTH of a sub I can put in there? My hunch is that the box won't handle a sub w/much more than a 5-6" top-mount depth, and that seems to be the critical measurement. The EFX sub is just about 5", from what I can gather.

Has anyone put a top-end sub in this box? Any concerns?

And how about the dash speaker placement? What can you cram in there? I got the Alpine R-series components, and put the tweets in the door where the mirror hits the window, so the stock factory tweets in the dash are bringin' me down, quality-wise, but I don't want those spots to just be empty.

FYI, the custom box is run off a basic Alpine 220x1 @4 ohms (400x1@2ohms), the highs off the same line of Alpine amp, 4x40w@4ohms, with Alpine R-Series components in front, R-series coaxials in the back. I kept the stock HU. Sounds amazing, but I need a better sub to match.

And the value of Dynamatting can't be overestimated -- it makes a HUGE difference, just in terms of engine noise, and a more solid feel to the doors and car in general. I'm not going to say it's as quiet as a Lexus, but it's a lot more quiet than a stock xB, and gives you a better 'room' for listening to music.

It looks like the mounting depth is 4-7/8". That means your choices will be fairly limited. I would look at the CM310d_ from Diamond Audio (4.8" depth), the 11Kv.2 from Elemental Designs (5.25" depth), or CTX10S_ from Image Dynamics (5" depth). I know the Diamond Audio sub will fit and works well in small shallow enclosures. I am not 100% sure that the other two will fit, but they work well in small shallow enclosures, too.

I also tried the same sub/box.

Didn't go low, didn't go loud. I ended up returning it to Crutchfield. Not much depth for a better woof, although you could make an MDF ring if the added height is not an issue. The sub screws are some kind of odd ball. Did manage to remove them with an allen wrench, but it destroyed the wrench.

If complete stealth is not an issue, I would go for another box and sub.

Dash location is generous. I have Vifa tweets in there-4" faceplate, 2"dp. x 3"dia. magnet-fits fine. Others have done 4" coax.

Yes, x2, on deadening is an absolute necessity! I just finished a second round in my xB and still want more. What a difference! Tighter midbass, cleaner sub bass and eerie quiet drive. My doors no longer sound tinny. As a matter of fact, I have to look real hard to be sure my doors locked. You could hear a loud, tinny "clank" before. Not now!

Best upgrade so far...even if you don't have a sound system!

Default Thanks for the input

Thanks for the input - I am looking at the Infinity Kappa 102.7, which should fit. Will let you know how it turns out.

And I'm also thinking about a round two with Dynamatting...
