Default Sony vs Kicker?? Help..

Ok, I'm about to add a little bass to my xB but I cant decide on whether I should put in 1300w 12 inch Sony explod sub that my brother is giving to me, or a 10 inch Kicker comp sub that I have.
I hear that the Sonys break down fast but my brother said that when he hooked them up both to his car,the Sony sounded better. I'm not looking to get into any competitions.
Just wanting to add some kick to the stock system. So I come here for advice from the real sound gurus .

Help me out guys. What should I do?

How many voice coils/ohms is each sub and what kind of amp are you going to use for power?

i say kicker, if you are wanting something small. That one 10 should do some good.

Kicker all the way. I have owned sony subs and kicker subs. I have not been happy with any sony car audio equipment I have owned.

for Sony, 1300 watts is the MAX that the sub can hit before it literally "implodes" and burns a voice coil

if you read the RMS (which is where the real power is) then it only has about 150 watts

KICKER on the other hand...

even the cheapest kicker made (Comp series) at about $80 for a 12" is still the absolute best bang for the buck.

besides, Sony has its hand in every cookie jar (tv's, computers, cell phones, digicams, ect...)

Kicker's been around for like, 25 years making only speakers

are you going with sealed or ported??? are you going for accent, or decibles??

I love the Sony sucks posts... they make me laugh.

Speaker wise, I would agree... Kicker is probably going to be a better sub that Sony.

I have 2 polk audio db (low end) 12s in a sealed box on a Sony Xplod Specialty Series (ebay) amps and it hit 135.9db legal (137.8 outlaw) on a rough tune. You probably won't reproduce that on WalMart Sony equipment, but it disproves the Sony Sucks generalizations.

Kicker hands down, FTW, why even bother asking... Sony Car Audio is good... for nothing really.

All you need is a nice 10" from Kicker and your all set. I made this over the span of a couple of days. Bad pic, but only one I have that gives visual of size of enclosure with sub compared to trunk:

lol, I wanted to buy those off of you, but shipping is a pain for subs so heavy. L7 serves me good too though.

I just tried the sony and the kicker my self. The sony hits harder but I think its because of the size.Maybe it will blow a coil faster but at least ill still have a back up.Im intaling it with a 800w performance teknique amp.I guess Ill have to wait untill its actually in my car to see what ill do.I get a feeling that I might end up putting the kicker in after.I know im low balling my self on this but its a start.Eventually I want to change the amp/s to Orion and the subs to JL audio.Just llike the good old days in my Camaro.Man I miss that car.

ahh sony, an aged basket design and crappy construction

go with a L5 and your all set man...thats all u need

i have 2 10inch L5's in my tC and they are loud(powered by a kicker zx1000RMS amp)

in a lil car, those L5's thump!

i have the kicker ks speajers front and rear powered by the kicker zx350.4 and the subs are waay louder than the speakers at max volume (unless i turn the gain down to match the 5V pre-out of course then its all nicey nice)

I would say that both have the merits, and if you properly power the sony, you should have no problem with it. I have seen and installed both brands and have seen them both take some abuse. remember, the speakers life is in your hands, turn the bass up to much, loud button on and too much volume to distort and you will torch anything. Remember, these questions are like coke vs. pepsi. it is all about what you like.

one L7 15" can easily dominate any 12" setup

...unless you have four 12" L7's...

...that gives me a idea...

square subwoofers for square cars!
