Default Triple Gauge Mount Location

I see that anyone with a triple gauge set up has used the a-pillar or the area to the left of the speedo. I want to install them in the dash area directly in front of the stearing wheel. B4 I go tearing away at the dash I was wondering if anyone knows if there is room for the depth of the gauges?

This topic may be covered somewhere already, but I have been searching all weekend and can not find anything about this area of the dash.

If you get a flashlight and look under the dash from the pedals area you'll see that there is alot of empty space to the left of the speedo. Also the that area is flat which makes putting the gauges easy. You can also remove the Instrument cluster in about 5 minutes to see whats behind the dash in that area. In my opinion having all gauges in the same plane as the speedo looks better than putting them between vents.

I didnt think of just looking up from underneath... Duh! I've been under there when installing my green lighting and have taken the speedo cluster panel off when changing that color setup. I need to go outside and see if I can see behind that section of dash that I want to use.

I am so set on putting my gauges there that I will be ____ed if there is a big hunk of steel frame or something back there!

Let me just throw this one in here. This is an OPTIONAL gauge console from the new FJ Cruiser. No idea if it is available blank if at all.

Thanks for all the pics everyone, lookin good.

But...

That is not where I want to mount my gauges. I want to insert the triple gauge set into the section of dash between the two heater vents directly past the steering wheel.

Like this from the latest Scion Magazine:

The above xB was presentd by Fred Chang, Lakai Footware, and jtuned.com. The gauges used here are low profile (flat) gauges. I like the look here best.
I don't want to have my gauge set up the same as everyone else did next to the speedo. I like it there, but would much rather put them in the area I spoke of.

Thanks anyway to all!

I'm going to put my 3 gauges in the flat area directly to the left of the speedometer. It looks like 2-1/16" gauges (electric) will fit. I haven't decided on what gauge manufacturer I'll go with but I'm leaning towards Autometer's Phantom or Phantom II series. I've e-mailed Autometer asking for maximum depth behind the mounting panel meaurements. I can't find that info anywhere on the web. I'm going to make sure before I start buyin', pullin' and cuttin!

I'm pretty shure Autometer fits there. Enough depth.

Desired location houses the main duct work for the heater and A/C. Didnt want to cut into that, I enjoy fresh air coming into the cabin. So I went ahead and mounted them next to the speedo.
