Underbody Lighting Newbie
I did a Search but came up empty. Please link me to the "official thread" on underbody lighting, not interior. I'm new to this but totally like the look. Is it legal? I have a BCP xB and think purple neon lights would look awesome underneath. What kind of shops install lighting? Dealership? Alarm shops?
What can I expect to pay for the light? Install? Thanks!
I just installed my lights on friday. it was pretty easy to do. you don't need many tools. maybe a screwdriver and some zip ties. I recommend you get a L.E.D. lighting kit from varad. they change to all kinds of different colors, and do cool patterns etc. i also have a BCP, and its cool having the color changing option instead of just going with one color....plus, the L.E.D. lights are waaay brighter than regular neon underbody kits.
P.S. i think the red or purple look the best with BCP

Not a very good picture, I'm having issues with my camera, and I hope to get a new
one soon.
www.oznium.com is a great place to shop for lights! From the basic budget Blaze kit
to Varad mentioned above, to the ICE LED that I have. Phil has them all!
If you talk to him, tell him I sent ya! (I wish I got a kickback for all the people I've
sent to him!)
If you can install car stereo, you can do an underbody light kit, it's even easier.
But if you aren't comfortable doing stereo or electrical stuff, then find help.
It's not that hard, but that's all relative since I've been doing custom wiring and
studio work for 16 years now. LOL
As for legal, it is NOT legal to have any colored lights on your car besides the ones
installed at the factory (IE Whites up front, Amber/Red on side, and Red in back).
It's different in other countries, but here in the US, you even need a permit to have
amber lights for a tow truck or plow truck.
That said, as long as you are not on the road and not in motion, most cops won't mess
with you. I see people going down the highway more often then I'd like to see with
their lights on...it's not worth the ticket for me to do that...but I might kick on my lights
for a quick sec just to show those guys what real lights look like. LOL

Thanks guys!!
The interior lighting is also from ICE LED. It's the model
they call the Flood (don't ask how much...). Plus one light
called the GEM that replaces the Dome Light.
I LOVE these lights. I used to be one of those people that
thought "disco lights" under your car was stupid, but after
seeing this lights, I'm HOOKED! Everywhere I go people
are like, "oh no, you didn't get those rice lights did you?"
The I kick them on and run through the demo and people
are floored.
I'm already shopping for more and upgrading what I have.
I'm ditching the dome light because the Flood in the back
just rocks so much, I'M GETTING TWO MORE! LOL
I'm also looking to fill in my wheel wells with a waterproof
version of the flood made specifically for wheel wells.
I've put my lights up against three different Varad kits, and
my lights KILL THEM! But then again, I also paid about
5X more.
There are a few things that make up for that extreme cost of
the ICE LED.
Brightness: Way brighter then ANYTHING else out there.
Smoothness: The Varad are nice, but these color mix better IMHO
I figure because of the brightness.
Features: The ICE LED "UFO" which is the kit I have under
the box is fully networkable. All the lights can work together,
or any add on lights (interior, engine, whatever) can work
by themselves or with a second "brain box" to be completely
independent of the main kit. But two brainboxes can even be
networked to work their magic together.
Fully programmable: I can literally program each patterns
color pallet. I can choose from full spectrum, down two
colors, COMPLETELY of my choice. If I want a pattern with
6 shades of purple only, I can totally do that. For the 4th of
July I reprogrammed each pattern to RED, WHITE, and BLUE
and set everything to randomize. It was a HUGE hit everywhere
I went!
Future Programmability: A future project from ICE LED is
to have the lights BlueTooth programmable. That's right,
take your laptop and program your own custom light patterns!
Not only that, but rumor has it they are working on a remote
control setup where you can use your cell phone to change
patterns and settings!!
These guys are NUTTY about lights. Whatever you can dream
up, they've probably already figured it out. I think they are
even working on "remote head" setup, which would be some
sort of really small cluster, or one LED that does 2 million
colors...so imagine the cup holder lights we can get from
Scion, except able to do 2 Million Colors, 4 times brighter,
and completely computer programmable and networkable
with the rest of your lights!!
Now imagine that "remote head" in your vents, your dash,
your gauge cluster, your head unit?!?
I'm REALLY stoaked about jumping in on this. Keep in mine,
the UFO kit that’s under my box, is over $800. I've given
up SO MANY MODS on my box in order to focus on lights.
Keep an eye out, I'll post photos as they come along.
Oh yeah, almost forgot, as for the under lighting on a 2"
drop. My ONLY issue: One day I was detailing my box and
I noticed my lights were really dim on one side. I flaked
because I thought something had failed or my install wasn't
that good...complete panic. I crawled under the box to find
that fresh tar had been kicked up by the front wheels and
completely caked on HALF the long tube on the passenger
side.
I used Meguiar’s Gold Class Bug and Tar remover, let it soak
in for 5 minutes, sprayed the lights down again, wait 5 minutes,
then wiped. They came out COMPLETELY CLEAN and not
even a scratch on them!!!
If you are curious as to how strong these lights are, check out

I just found that video the other day.

Again, REALLY expensive, but this is one of those, you get
what you pay for things. If these are out of your budget,
then ask Phil (owner of Oznium and Sponsor for Scion Life)
what he recommends for YELLOW>
Edited for my Atrocious Spelling.

You seem to be the next "ADDICTED2ICELED." i've had the addiction for lighting ever since i got my license (a mere 3 years ago), and don't plan to stop it. I don't have any mods on my tC currently (since payments eat up a big chunk of my income), but it wll be coming along slowly. Over the three years of installing lights in my previous ride (a '95 Ford Escort), i've learned a great deal. Mostly through asking questions, having my dad help me, and just doing it myself. I evolved from just plugging the cheapo neon tubes from Autozone into my cigarette plug, to having over 20 cold cathodes (just on the interior), wheel well LEDs, u/b, and whelen strobes. All wired to a wireless switch. Granted i got just as much ____ as i did praise for the kind of mods i was doing, but it didn't really matter to me. I enjoyed doing it, and that was good enough for me. Keep on glowing... and if you ever have any questions, i'm always happy to answer them, or lead you in the direction to find the answer.
Poopie? i didn't write that.

Perhaps the PlasmaGlow Platinum in Yellow: http://www.oznium.com/platinum
It isn't LED, it is very bright! You will be happy with it.
Another option is using a bunch of Yellow cathodes: http://www.oznium.com/cathode-kit
You will have seal them up, and figure out a good way to mount them.
They are very thin, so they may be a good option for lowered scions.

In CA you can have them but the tubes must not show, and no blue, white or red because they are designated for emergency vehicles. Im not sure if this is actual law but a co-worker has been stopped for other violations and was told about hiding the tubes and the color.
The way I understand it in CA from reading laws is that the only color illegal is Red. Certainly the tubes should not show, since that just looks bad.
Whether it is illegal and whether you get stopped are 2 seperate issues. You might get stopped for yellow, even if it is completely legal...
