I thought those were heating elements... aren't the reception wires on the rear side glass?
Anyways, I find that reception really sucks in this car. It's not as clear as it could be. Maybe it's a ploy for customers to upgrade to XM. I'll stick to KROQ or KPWR.

I think the reception is much better in the xB than my old Camry ...it's a powered antenna, so if you have an aftermarket head unit, you need to send power to it.

The antenna is built into the rear side glass. not the back window.

Obviously you have never had a VW; the reception in those things sucks ___, I couldn't even get NPR without all kinds of static.

Mine gets good reception. The only trouble I get that I haven't seen on my other cars is that the AM is static-laden when I'm in the garage. A car length out the door and its fine... I love the fact that there's no antenna mast, keeps the lines smooth.

Yep, did it. Reception seemed poor on stock HU as well. It seems to be occurring more often on LA freeways. I figured that would actually be better places since it's a little higher up than streets.

Nope, but in my c280 reception was acceptable. By the way, did your VW have one of those "Fuba" looking antennas?

You must be checking out the traffic before heading out...smart. :D

I have a problem with letting people borrow my cars, and getting it back missing antennas so I like the idea of an element design. I had the same design in the windshield of my old Chevelle and reception was great.

Dang, I think this would prompt me to not lend my car to such people! Is antenna-stealing a NY thing?

i can't figure out why the reception sucks with aftermarket radio, i have the 5000MP and 102.7 gets staticky sometime

i know theres power to it, because some of the stations are very clear

The stock Scion headunit has an antenna booster built in, you can buy one at radio shack (so i'm told) and put it between your aftermarket headunit and the antenna and that should fix the problem.

My reception was killer with the stock HU with my aftermarket.

Yes they are, and I was surprised to notice that the antennas in the side glass is different on the left and right sides. Perhaps one is designed for AM and the other for FM, as they are on considerably different frequencies.
