Default xB rear wheel well sub box?

The shock mounts that form the rear wheel well in the xB's cargo area seem to waste a good bit of floor space. I was trying to think of a good use for the vertical space above them when it occurred to me that a sub box of pretty decent cubic footage could fit in that space - enough for an 8", probably. The 5 1/4" rear speakers could be removed and the wiring reused if necessary. Main drawback is that the cargo floor can't be opened while the box is in place. See below - anybody ever seen this done, or attempted it?

I've see alot of people used the storage area for a flush mount single sub. Though your idea will work, I would replace the speaker wires with higher gauge for the subs. Wheres the amp go?

I know the cargo cubby itself has several preformed enclosures available, I was just looking for something different.

Amp could go under the passenger seat, or maybe on the opposite wall of the cargo area (assuming you use only one side for a sub box).

You might be on to something... I also want to keep my rear space, but hate to put a sub on the floor of the rear cargo space. If you ever have to carry anything the stuff would be sitting on your sub and that SUCKS!!! I'm going to work on that same idea if you don't mind Hoss and maybe we can come up with something....

Feel free! I have no skill with fiberglass fabrication, so if I try it, it'll be with MDF. I might fab a test enclosure from scrap plywood to firm up the dimensions.

The trick will be mounting it on the sidewall. Maybe it would be possible to bolt the box to the wall using the cargo tie-down nut just forward of the rear speaker? Might also be possible to remove the plastic cap over the strut and use that nut (or a bracket slid underneath it) to mount the box; it's the same mounting point you'd use for a rear upper strut bar, so it should be safe to mount heavy things there.

Which reminds me, it'll probably work better on the left wall, since I (and most people) rarely open the spare tire hatch.

Actually, you can fit a pir of 10-12" inch subs flush mount with a problem as I did. Althought it isnt pictured, I have a lexan cover to go over the subs when I need the space. Since the subs are recessed the lexan doesnt look to bad.

So I guess your saying that when there covered you can still hear them....? By the way they look great I just wonder if you could hear or feel them and not have them sound muffled when you put you bags or suitcase on top of them...? But again that setup looks great!!

Check my profile. I built a completely hidden fiberglass sub box that fit's one 12" speaker. I am also trying to sell that very box minus speaker.

Well there you go, thats the draw back. When the cover is on at low volume the bass is muffled but you still get a beat. At high volume with something that hits hard you might be in trouble. Although, you just gave me a great I idea, what if I drill 1/4" holes in the lexan......hmmmmm.....I might just have to try that. Anyway, even with the muffling it is so rare that I need put the cover on. When you fold down the seats and use the sides of the box I can pretty much manage.

Several nice setups there, but the point of mounting a smaller sub like an 8" on the sidewall instead of on the cargo area floor is that #1, you lose no cargo room since the rear tower eats up that space anyway, and #2, you don't want to be stacking things on a sub or amp. I treat my xB more like a Tacoma than an MR2, and while I want some bass, I don't want to lose the ability to throw a dead deer in the back. On a tarp, of course...

I would say I have to Agree with TheLastBrunnenG on his last post. The pics that others have posted are SWEET, but I'm also not trying to eat all my space on the floor with a sub. My friend got the subs that go under the seat and they just sound to muffled and all the sound is right up front and not really around you.... Hey TheLastBrunnenG did you get the measurements yet...?

I have some empty under seat boxes for 10" woofers that I am selling for 50.00 each. They are made from 1/2 mdf and are painted with bedliner spray. They have .41 cubic feet each and they fire downwards.

If you're looking for a sub box,I have one for sale, it fits a 10" in the rear compartment area on passenger side.
