Default xB underseat enclosure prototype (56k beware)

Well I took the time to design and build a box suited for a 10" or 8" sub for under the passenger seat. My main focus for the box is to free trunk space and go for a real stealth install. Other issues that I adressed with this box is:

1. to avoid taking away any rear passenger foot room
2. provide adequate ventilation for the stock heater vent below the seat
3. maximize mounting depth for a broader range of subs
4. no mods or cutting required. Only mod is to remove the seat and plop in the box.

I designed this box with the elemental designs 11kv2 sub in mind but since the box has a mounting depth of 5.25" or 6" and a volume of just under a half cube, most 10" and 8" subs will fit. It sounds awesome to me, even better than the 12" MTX I had in the 1 cube box in the trunk.

The box is made of 1/2" mdf which proves to be plenty strong since the enslosure is small and the cut size of the pieces is very small as well. The prototype was glued and screwed together since I didn't have any clamps at the time. The production box will be glued and nailed. Finally all joints are sealed with silicone caulking.

I'd like to gauge your interest in this enclosure and if I get enough, I will become a site sponsor and offer it for sale with exact price to be determined. Any finished product will have a much better proffesional paint job than the prototype that was just spray painted flat black. Here are some pics please tell me what you think.

Looks like the e-bay one though... I'd rock it if the price was right.

6.5" mounting depth? That's enough for my JL12. How much are you looking to get off these things?

Well I can't disagree with you there but there are significant differences, 2 major ones that made me design my own. The first being the mounting depth. The ebay one advertises and mounting depth of 5.25" and the sub I was looking at originally was and alpine that had a depth of 5.75" and after allot of searching I found that most good 10" sube have a depth of greater than 5.25. The second major reason is that the ebay takes away about 3 extra inches of rear passenger foot room. My design stops where the floor mat starts and the ebay one goes 3 inches onto the floor mat.

Your right about the mounting depth but a 12" sub usually requires .8 to 1.0 ft^3 and would be impossible to do in the dimensions of the current setup. I just did some quick measurements and the best I could do would be around .7 ct^3 by utilizing the 3 inches in the back and front of the box.

Ok, I am interested as well. actually very interested. But i am wondering how the down firing sub would sound. My friend/installer is warning me against under seat enclosures because there is very little room for the sound waves to move around, thus producing the deep bass we are after.
that could all be B.S. too, but I know little about audio.

Also, would there be any benefits to a ported box? just wondering.

what up chez!

Your friend is partially right. The ideal place for subs in a car is almost always in the trunk. That is because there is more reflectivity before the sound reaches the driver, and higher reflectivity equals louder when it comes to bass. These underseat enclosures aren't that far off though. The difference is only nominal, besides freeing trunk space which is the most important issue, the underseat enclosure helps bring the impact of the bass more upfront. You shouldn't be dissapointed.
The issue of ported vs. sealed is highly debatable. Again a ported enclosure yeilds slightly higher volume while a sealed enclosure tightens the bass response and usually has a smoother sound curve. The important difference here is that a ported enclosure requires nearly double the amount of space as a sealed box, and we don't have that much space to work with.

nick. good job, most people don't understand the amount of labor that goes into a project like that. I like it, you did a great job. Bill

i'm definitely interested in this, it seems like it would be a good alternative for those of use who:
a) need trunk space
b) want a subwoofer
c) can't afford a custom "floating" fiberglass enclosure

so if it's a little less airspace then optimal, i'm willing to sacrifice if i can have a nice solid sub enclosure, and if it'll sound decent. I would definitely be for one under the driver seat, but if that makes it smaller (and less loud/clear/whatever) then passenger seat is cool for sure.

good work neckbonenick!

Is that for both?? I would be happy with just one box,(under driver) but if both are that price, you can count me in. And I think one other friend of mine who lives nearby, so you could ship it all to one address.

Let me know!

i like the idea, but it'd probably look extra hot if its see-through, like if the sub box is made of plexi glass with some neon lighting inside, it'd kick ___! but thatz just me

gj tho , i was wondering when someone would finally think of something like that instead of a usual trunk setup
