Default XM question

I have done some searches and appears my stock H/U in order to become "XM" equipped will need a tuner and antenna. Would it better to go through Scion for this or just have Circuit City/Best Buy install the "XM" add on pieces (least it comes with a remote)? But will these add-ons not allow me to then close the radio door?

Thanks for any input.

the "roady type" units can be mounted anywhere so you can close the door if it's not mounted inside ... which it will probably cover most of the radio up anyway if it was mounted there... you'll need a scion/toyota piece if you want it to be controlled through the factory radio...

there are units now that are offered by Terk that will allow you to connect an aftermarket radio to xm... these pieces normally go for 130 so if you figure that on top of a decent radio (kenwood, pioneer, sony) for ~250 and kit and harness 30 bucks you are getting a decent radio w/xm setup for around 400 ... the factory xm add on alone goes for about 450

good luck on your decision

Thanks for the info. XM is going to be much more expensive than I thought!

I have XM in my xB, and it's from SCION. I got a free month from XM because I installed it at SCION. Frankly, I like the way it works with the stock HU.

Hey, to each his/her own. I do know, however, you want to stick away from any XM deal that just works through a FM station. The sound is not as good.

So did you get the optional H/U with tuner when you got your Scion? Or did you swap out after the fact? How much did the tuner/antenna cost? I would like to keep the H/U like you did as I do like the stock one.

Thanks.

I got the tuner and antenna installed by SCION after I bought my xB. The HU was already ready for the XM. I think the cost was somewhere around $300 (?)....Shoot, I wish I could remember, but I am way tired.

All I know is the XM tuner goes under the front passenger seat, and the antenna goes on the backof the Box. It looks clean, and sounds great.

So I take it I can't just buy an XM tuner and antenna from Best Buy and plug it into the back of my factory HU and control the XM through the factory 6-disc HU?
