I'm bringing them in this week to get an estimate on how much it's going to cost to get 'em cleaned up. Problem is, all of the chrome-plating places are in California, so it might get really pricey.

The owner said if I wanted, I could have them painted, but it seems wrong to paint over the chrome. I just don't want these wheels to turn into a mondo-expensivo project.

I hear you. I bid and won a set of Boyds 15x8 0 offset last year. when I got it, its whack. e-mail the seller, got my money back. Seller don't want the wheels back. Now if I wanted to, I have to spend $400 to bring back the wheel to show condition.
I pass for now, but if I find a cheaper place, I'll do it.

Sid and Sushi... try contacting Wheels of Steel in Visalia California. This is the company with the website http://www.custombuiltsteelwheels.com They can polish the crap out of old oxidized aluminum wheels. And they have a chrome shop right next door owned by the guys father. Both do great work, and I have used them in the past.

I can't garauntee the lowest prices, or cheap shipping. But at least it is another avenue to pursue.

Well, it'd probably cost $200+ for round-trip shipping. Ugh! However, thanks for the recommendation!

On another note, I have polished half of the bolts that hold the wheels together. Some chrome polish and a Dremel tool can do wonders! I thought about beginning to sand down some of the oxidation on the barrels, but I don't want to ruin anything or make more work for a shop.

You may need more than a chrome polish for those. Check out Megquirs products. It used to be called "Medium Cut" and is sort of a pinkish/brown liquid. I restored MANY oxidized and rusted chrome pieces of several '65 Mustangs I had with nothing more than that stuff and a rag.

The wheels are currently getting refinished -- stripped and polished out. No more chorme -- just polished aluminum.

Still not sure what to do with the centercaps, though ...

Got the wheels back from the polisher -- wow! They look new! Now I just have to look into some custom metal centercaps. I'll post pics soon.

I'm getting quotes for some new centercaps. I wonder if I contacted Rays Engineering if I could buy new ones? Probably not, since they are 13-year-old wheels.

I got a quote from one company that said $100-$150 per centercap! Eek!

I'll get pics as soon as I can; but my digicam is busted!

Well, if I can ever get them done, I'll put them on! I'm still waiting on centercaps, and I need to torque the bolts around the perimeter down.
