Default new rims and tires.. New problem.. help please...

I posted earlier the pictures of my rims. Here's the latest. I'm having problems with steering wheel vibrations while driving over 75mph...sometimes. Sometimes it will do it and sometimes it will not. When it does, the steering wheel wobbles or shakes back and forth real rapidly. It also seems that the condition of the road makes it worse. (maybe it's the road itself and not my tires)

Granted, this is my first time ever riding on 205-40 tires (damn.. i feel every rock, nook, and cranny on the road)

Are my tires off balance? Or could it be alignment? I don't understand how sometimes it does it and sometimes it doesn't. I let go of the wheel and my car stays straight.

This sucks... someone offer me some info please.

I have actually had a similar experience.

After having my xB lowered and then aligned, I started getting a slight shake around 70mph. But it doesn't do it all the time, and sometimes it does it at different mph.

I had the wheels rebalanced and the alignment checked and everything is set up correctly, but I still get a slight, inconsistent vibration.

I have heard this same story before from other people, but have never found an answer.

I know that I didn't help your situation, but you are not alone.

I'd bet your tires aren't ballanced. You might also have a tire or rim that's out of wack. Make sure their all pumped up the same and all your nuts are tight. if the vibe is still there, get the tires re balanaced.

also, if you don't have hubcentric rins, then maybe someone mounted the wheels off center.

if you mounted the wheels yourself, check if you torqued the nuts correctly. either that or you need to take your car to get its wheels aligned.

Sounds like they are out of balance.

Default Vibration

Hi there, Happen to be a woman but married to a master tech so here is his thoughts.
Rotate the front tires to the back, check airpressure and do torque the lugs properly. See if the vibration moves to the seat of your pants instead of the steering wheel. Hopefully it will go away but if not you have narrowed down the culprit to rebalance only a couple.

Are your wheels hubcentric? If not, maybe you need hubcentric rings.

perfect. This will also help ensure the wheels are centered. make sure when mounting them you hand tighten the nuts and rock the wheels so the nuts seat well in the center of the hole. Hubcentric rings are in no way needed as long as you mount your wheels carefully. Or, more accurately, unless you mount your wheels carelessly ;-)

That's my thought too. The thought of not using them seems silly, How many people are you going to need to help center it perfectly???

What are the specs of your new wheels, specifically the center bore?

Out of round rims (cheap knockoffs maybe?), Cheap tires, or out of balance tires. My 2 cents. I bought a set of BFG wides one time and they would not balance, I rotated front to back, still same problem, you can get bad tires or rims sometimes. Good luck with your problem.

uh, one. it's no big deal, you just have to make sure you wiggle the rim so the thing seats properly. The rings do nothing but make this part harder to screw up. They don't bare any weight or anything like that, so they're a wasted expendature for most people.

It's most likely either he doesn't have hubcentric rings/or the wheels are unbalanced.

The hubcentric ring does indeed take pressure off the studs, because it doesn't have to rely on just the studs for the wheels to stay on the car.

I used to have a set of wheels, balanced when I got them by a reputable shop--my steering wheel jumped all over the place and had a lot of vibrations through it--and it was centered for a Honda, not the scion hubcentric size--so it was just being held on by the 4 lugs, and had no center to make sure the wheel was absolutely straight on.

Now that i have wheels with the hubcentric size that matches that of the scion, no vibrations whatsoever.

i checked the tire pressure.. I think they were over-inflated. I lowered each tire a few pounds and everything is rock solid.... The tire says MAX Pressure 44lbs... but no regular pressure number......

Tires are balanced!
