Default Retitle: Cal Choppy Quest (JDM moon-disk white rims)

Does anyone stateside have these yet on their xB?
They are JDM aftermarket and are not all that expensive
but I don't know if they are carried in stock by anyone stateside.

I guess I can order direct from Japan?

You get the look of a generic, white painted five spoke with the moon disk off.
Put on the moon disk (five Torx screws secure it well, inset, into the rim) and you have a vintage narrow whitewall with moon sort of look.

Made to fit our cars, too! I would be getting the 15 x 6.5 size identical to OEM steel but you can go larger.

---anyone here have them yet?

here is the wheel.
The logos are optional stickers you'd buy separate. I won't be installing the logos.

The wheel is modular in the sense that you buy the wheel and if you want the disks you buy the disks and if you want RAYS torx screw kit, you buy that for a few bucks and if you want a gennie Japanese made torx screwdriver, you get that for another four dollars. And the sticker set (two per wheel) are maybe twenty dollars.

Edits, 9/28:

here is the Factory site:
http://www.rayswheels.co.jp/indexe.html
They don't sell except through dealers

and for the satin crowd, how do you like this?

monolithic! RAYS calls this one from the Garci line "Cal Rotty". Handsome wheel even a moon hater could like.

I like them. I definitely think you should pursue this avenue for your RS2. No offense, but those plastic wheel covers you have on there now are not cutting it with your high speed Tein coilovers and wicked camber shims. It might take some effort, but well worth it in my opinion. Keep us up to date...

Agree with you above.

EDIT: have learned at the "Best Offset for xB" thread
https://www.scionlife.com/forums/vie...070685#1070685
That these Choppy's offset is very nearly a match for the OEM steelie's offset.
So! On I go to see whether a set can be bought directly from Japan.

with the cover removed it's a plain five spoke painted cast aluminum wheel

Two wheel-treatements in one. Three really:
-a narrow whitewall look when the moon is installed
-a moon wheel cover that won't fall off, and allows airing the tire without pulling off the cover (Mooneyes' classic moons must be removed to check air pressure.
-a white painted prosaic five spoke that will compliment nicely with the yellow car.
-and if I paint the main roof of the lowered xB white we get a sharp color co-ordination in unpretentious two-tone style.

Looks like a GO now.

Here's the car last evening. The 20 buck Rally brand plastic covers aren't so weak looking that I can't enjoy them for what they are during the meantime.
I suppose these are still better looking than the ugly 06 plastic OEM covers.

OK, so I am on the quest for Garcia Cal Choppys.
These are JDM wheels made by "Rays", a medium sized industrial outfit with their own manufacturing facilities.

It is Sunday today. I don't know yet how to order the wheels. Through some dealer in Japan, probably.

Rays does list a phone number for "Rays USA INC". I'll inquire there tomorrow.

Google translates Japanese web pages in the usual awkward fashion. Sort of funny.
A review of the Cal Choppys may be found in this Japanese page:

I guess we step over the humor line now. And why not?

I try to decipher what the man really means... (screenshot of that review)

Update, 9/28: Audra, of the firm here Stateside that is an authorized RAYS dealer, says a centercap can be gotten for the wheel, at additional cost.

I wanted to comment to that guy's wheel review but I could not register. Forums are alike the world over. Rules! Only here, the rules suffer a bit by being run through the Google beta automatic page translator.

smile!

Words to forum by,,,
The cogency of those Japanese posting rules is such that
it would be a boon should Scion Life adopt them
exactly as printed above.

this is a sort of documentary thread centralizing Cal Choppy data along with humor now.

"Matsuda Spear" apparently has installed the Choppy's on another kind of box.
I think they really need moon covers installed asap

let's look at his photo gallery next and see what's what.

This is a documenting thread really. No one here has seen Cal Choppys
I can safely say this: Research of other forums shows the RAYS company has a rep for making high quality, not crap knock-off wheels.
This particular wheel is a cast wheel made to a price point.
It's not super expensive.
More exotic wheels in the RAYS lineup include super light forged aluminum and even magnesium racing wheels.
It's a company in the wheel business for 32 years.
They make the wheels in house. So they know what they are doing.

Now, where to buy? Looks like I'll have to find a Japanese vendor willing to ship overseas.
Here's the first possibility.
http://tinyurl.com/dh6ms
This is a Google-translated page and that means it's hard to read and has funny parsings.

I hope they'll reply to a letter of inquiry.

===addendum: regarding pricing. This place linked above is a tire and wheel merchant working the same sort of business as our sponsor here, TireRack.com.
Similar prices too! My F1 tires if bought and shipped to a Japan destination would cost no more than they cost stateside.

Edit, 9/28: We have found a USA dealer. This is the proper way to order the wheels.

I know you can get Rays... just can't remember from whom. Look up Van Phan @ onetonegarage.com and ask him

thanks, OK, I'll do that if I strike out at Bubs. Letter sent to Bubs in Gunma prefecture. Wait.

If anyone knows of a stocked agent in USA, of course, please let us know. I suspect a few peeps here would like to have Choppys.
Funny wheels are so cool- and these are like, tailor made for Box-like cars. A unique
rice look. MoonEyes may blink if we get some Choppys imported to the States.

The internet is an amazing resource
for expending time searching and
writing all over the world
for goods almost no one wants that nobody stocks...
