Default Wheel Rub Issue...Help!

Hello, I just bought an 05 xb and the previous owner had 2 wheels that were 205 40 17 and the other two were 205 50 17. He had one of the 40's up front and one of the 50's up front. The 50 wheel was rubbing on the wheel well. Now I have both 50s on the back and the 40s up front. However I want winter tires (205 50 17) but do not want the rub and do not know if four 50s would get rid of the rub. Is the rub because of the different sizes that were in the front or will I need wheel or hub spacers with all 50s on? Thanks a bunch

lol this is funny. you need to tell us WHERE are you rubbing ..... right now you got the 50s in the back and the 40s in the front. is it still rubbing? if you want new tires just go with the size of the tire you have on that IS NOT rubbing ....

It isnt rubbing with the 40s in the front. It was rubbing on the inside of the wheel well. I would like to get winter tires (205 50 17) and was wondering if the rub was because of the different size wheels or simply because that wheel is too big. I would like the 50s because I have read they are a better ride. As far as i know the scion is not lowered...I dont know much about cars so I'll try and answer whatever I can and any input would be appreciated.

if you were rubbing with the 50s in the front and not rubbing anymore with 50s in the back, then it is because of tire size. the difference between the 2 tires is the thickness of the black wall. why don't you try getting 205/45/17? =] but if you wanna save and just get 2 tires, then you'll have to put the 50s in the back and 40s in the front.

You still haven't told about the rim size and offset or if you are lowered, very important when dealing with fitment. Using this calculator, http://www.rimsntires.com/specs.jsp you input the oem size tire and then you other choice and if gives you the specs on how the two tires size out. Not dealing with width or backspace because you have not supplied this info, the 50 series tire is over sized by 5.8% and the 40 series is under sized by 1.2%. you could split the difference by running a 45 series tire all the way around and end up with it at 2.2% bigger, which should not rub, but if it was me... I would run those as your summer tires and leave them alone and pick up a set of 15" steelies and get your winter tires in the stock size to give you that sidewall that you mentioned will give you a better ride. The lower the series the bumpier the ride. Why do you want to run 17" winters?, if you were to hit a curb. I would rather have a dent in my 15" steelie instead of my 17" rim. Plus the cost of switching them out twice a year with off set the cost of the 15" steelies. I currently have 15" steelies with 65 series snows for winter, 15" xxr 513 with 50 series for spring and fall and I run 18 with 35 series in the summer.

Do yourself a favor and get your winters on steel in the stock size, the damage that could occur from potholes or sliding into a curb is not good for a 17" rim.

Sorry for the long read, CanxB

Thanks.. That is exactly what I did. I bought steelies with some Blizzaks on them from a guy for pretty cheap and the tires look brand new. Plus with a black xb the black steelies make it look a little 'meaner' ha.
