I read on the life somewhere that you can remove some pillars and black tape stuff and there is body paint underneath. Is that the stuff around the windows on the exterior of the car?

I searched this ten times in different ways and I found nothing

 

Yup it's black tape on the window frames, under it is body colored paint. Black xB's don't have the tape though.

 

personally, I think the tape looks better than the alternative on most colors. the reason for this is that without the tape the windowlines are uneven once the eye reaches the rear window.

That may be a good idea for a cheaper replacement than Scion. These plastic overlays from scion are about $45-75 per piece, there are 5 pieces per car per side including the piece on the post between the doors. Make sure you will like it BEFORE you remove these. Hope they can get you something that works well firesquare.
