You would think LEDS would be much brighter than a regular 7440 bulb.

LEDs are plenty bright, they just don't throw the light the same way a conventional bulb does. And because of the tail light design with the cover over the bulb you can't see most of the LEDs on a regular replacement bulb.
I've tried almost every option out there in the way of bulbs for the set of smoked Heilx tails I got for the wife's xB. I've tried buying red bulbs, LEDs, tinting my own bulbs, bulb condoms. Right now we are back to stocks. The overlay option is something I considered, but the wife wanted smoked, no red.
The only bulbs I haven't tried yet are these...

Just in case anyone wants to give them a shot. I don't know if they will even fit in the housing because of the arm that holds the bulb cover. But if they would work, the LED arms would likely extend past the cover.

I don't know if they will clear the cover or not. If they do you'll probably have anywhere from 3 to 6 LEDs pointed directly to the lens. They should be pretty bright, but probably will not reflect off of the housing at all.
If you get them in, make sure to get day and night pics.
