The Sonars are some of the best, easily purchased projectors. You may need to reseal them a bit to prevent internal fogging, but otherwise, they're great with HID.

Just keep in mind that projectors use a different bulb type (9006, instead of H4).

Get some Sonars... they look great and the cutoff is pretty good. There have been a few who have run into a bad batch (remounting the drivers side aiming), but the count was very low. Reseal them to prevent fogging, no doubt about that.

Pick up some automotive grade super thick clear vinyl to keep the plastic shell looking new. Commonly referred to as a clear-bra.

You just seal the parts that piece together. Don't take them apart. I have them and never sealed them. So far no issues. But I think they are giving you good advice. Phenoseal is good and not costly for sealing. Transparent.
Just go on ebay. Verify that they are sonars if not noted by the seller.

I believe these to be sonars. You might want to verify with seller.

You can see the little 'S' sticker behind the signal light hole on both of them.
'S' is for SONAR. Sometimes they come without the orange, already cleared.

If they do not have the orange reflector, then the sonars are from old new stock. Meaning the stock is old... but still new in the box.

I gotta say it MyBlackyXb... I stumble over your paragraphs quite a bit. The bold text doesn't help either.

If you want the best projector type headlights you can get for a first generation xB, then the Sonars are the way to go (perhaps the only way now). As with almost all aftermarket headlights (doesn't matter who the manufacturer is), you will need to bake and reseal them so they will not fog up. The only time I have not had to reseal the housing on a set of headlights was when I purchased a set of DEPO headlights for one of my other cars... just so happened that DEPO made all of the OEM lights for that particular car.

Why do you have to bake them in order to seal them?

I got mine without the orange about 2 years ago.

Baking them will reactivate the glue that is used around the edge of the seal. You don't have to bake them, but the reseal that way has been the most effective.

Questions: Is that normal? Are they no good? Has anyone encountered this before?
No it isn't normal for this to happen. There's a chance the bulbs had some type of contamination on them and therefore started smoking. Even barely touching the bulb with your fingers can cause this to happen due to the oils on your skin. This is true for both HIDs and halogen bulbs though.

Either that or the HID gods have frowned upon your friend for attempting to put HIDs in the stock reflective housing. It's all about the smite! I'm betting on the HID gods being angry rather than some scientific mumbo jumbo though.

Sonar goes out of the way to mention that HID's should not be installed in them.
I have even read it on this site.
Just a technicality?

Its just like warning labels on pain killers "do not take with alcohol, affects will become more awesome" or however its worded...

We probably wouldnt be having this talk if I had paid attention to warning labels my whole life... brb, needing to get stitches

Installing Sonars are super easy. Drop the front bumpercover, unbolt 4 bolts for each light (or is it three) and reassemble. To install a set of headlights, it only takes me about 15 mins. The part that takes the longest on sonars for me was the aiming.
