Default BSP (Black) Xb: Has Anyone Claimed the Paint Under Warranty.

Alright, I've had enough. My Black Xb is 6 months old with 8,000 miles. The paint is terrible! It looks so dull and blotchy and has picked up a million scratches.

I have waxed it since I got it. I've used black wax for the scratches and Meguiars Deep Crystal System Polish. I've probably hand waxed this thing 8 times, so far, with microfibers. The paint has no resistance to staining, scratching, or discoloration. Basically, it looks like I have had body damage which has been repainted. Yes, it looked this bad when i picked it up with 8 miles on the odometer. It had no finish, from new.

I was at a dealer this weekend with 6 2006 Xbs on the lot. The black was much duller than the other colors. Whenever I ask around, the dealer types tell me "everyone complains about the black". As if that helps my crappy looking car.

What I want to know, has anyone had these repainted under warranty? Is there going to be a recall? Do I have to wait until it falls off or rusts away? Under what conditions can I get it repainted? Does it literally have to fall off or wash away? At the rate it's going, I won't have to wait long.

Black (BSP) Xa and Tc owners may post here as well. I have a close friend who is a litigation attorney, and I want to know if there is going to be some resolution here.

Thanks,
Bill

if you leave wax on too long it will actually mess up your paint... are you sure you wiping all of it off before you hit the sun? just a suggestion, take it to a professional detailer before you start the litigation. A friend of mine has a black car and he ruied the paint by polishing and then not putting on a layer of wax.

I myself have complaints about the paint itself, not about the dullness. The paint on the xB is very thin. It's like they painted the car literally with one coat of paint then with clear. I already have a chip on my 05 on the front roof line. This small chip is already exposing the underside metal already.

It's just hard to do anything about it in terms of warranty in my opinion. Our cars are made on a budget. Cheap car=cheaper made Toyota. I guess that explains the quality of the ride itself.

I'm already debating on whether to go witha whole new paint job on this thing besides being only 1 years old.

I have to say my Blue paint scratches very easy. Also the windshield looks like I should have 200,000 miles on the car, lots of damage. If they wont replace it Im going to trade in. Only 3800 miles.

If anything, I'll be claiming the spots on my hood under warranty. The dealership I went to first told me it was moisture trapped in the clearcoat and a heat gun would remove it. BULLCRAP! It looks like japanese kanji writing in my hood... it's like a sheet of paper landed on the paint before it was dry, and they clear coated over it. It WILL go to the dealer...

Also... I'm a detailing guru... I make 6 year old paint look brand new. Once it gets warm, I'll post a detailing FAQ specific to the xB (cause I haven't had a chance to detail it yet, I'll let you know what products work best on our crappy paint).

What they said is true about the moisture in the clearcoat. We have had a few instances where xBs come in with this on the hood. What happens is the clear plastic wrap on the vehicles from the factory traps water and it literally absorbs into the clear coat causing it to look "blotchy." All of our issues were fixed with a heat gun in our collision department and literally took just a few minutes. This should have been fixed before you took delivery. If it wasn't, take it to the dealer and make them do it!

i have an 05 xb and I spray Automotive paints , i dont notice any problems with the thickness of paint they put on it or the quality of paint. I will say this though Metallic black is very easily made dirty on acount of the dark undertones and the shinniness. Automotive clear is very durable material so my question is where you buffing it with a hand buffer or by hand ? cause you have burnished the finish down if you werent carful.

I met with the Scion factory guy who is in charge of paint for north america this weekend at a Scion event. I actually brought up the BSP quality issue with him and he said he never heard anybody complain about it. I told him he wasnt listening very much apparantly. He told me he would look into it and mention it to the people back at corporate. He was a way rad guy and I believe he'll look into it further. I know that doesnt help you exactly but at least it was mentioned to someone in power...

Well, they tried to fix it with a heat gun, and it did nothing... they said it was gone, but when I washed it the other day and it was clean and in the sunlight, it was still there.

That really sucks 8(

As much as I like the color black, I absolutely refuse to ever purchase another black vehicle, EVERY flaw or blemish shows its self prominently.

That said, I have also noticed that the paint on these cars doesn't seem nearly as thick as I have had on other vehicles. Is there even a primer base?

I've had the same problems with mine. It started as soon as I got the car. Always adding more and more scratches no matter how careful I was. I just finished using Zaino Z-2 scratch and swirl remover with good results, but not perfect. I talked to 2 paint and body shops about color sanding and high speed polishing and the first wanted $1000.00 and the second said between 475.00 and 600.00. He told me the paint nowadays is so thin that they have difficulty not burning thru the paint themselves and they do this type of a lot. Good luck with your troubles, and if someone has had good results a good scratch remover I'd love to hear about it.

I deal with a lot of paints and automotive paints in my company and black especially metallic black is the worst color to deal with, i alwasy suggest white , silver or any light color metallic paint over black or red cause scratches and blemishs will show fast.

try buffing it with a mild wax like turtle or mothers but try not to use an electric or air powered buffer those can wear through the paint if your not carful. From what i can tell the paint and clear are definatly thick enough but it is a factory sprayed spaint which means its not going to be as thick as if it was hand sprayed at a paint shop but thats not neccessarily better.

Sounds like your clear coat needs some attention. Try using a polish and not a wax. It will polish up your clear coat. I use asto-shield (big yellow can). Lots of others out there. It will last much longer than wax and will not build up residue.

My BSP scratches if you look at it to hard I am very picky about washing and waxing it even in these crappy Ohio winter. The paint quailty is very poor. This is my first Toyota product(have had VWs and Fords most of my life) and this is by far the worst paint quality I have seen. It will make me think twice befrore buying OR recommending another Toyota vehicle.

Actually what I think it is, is that nobody has ever had a black or dark colored vehicle before. Black is a very beautiful color when it is kept up well and the owner knows how to take care of it.

I have been painting and detailing cars for almost 20 years and there is nothing wrong with the quality of paint that Toyota has used on the Scion line. As far as the front end getting chipped, well just take a look at the front end.....it is flat just like a face of a brick, So of course it is going to chip easily.
