Default Clear Plex for XB Windshield

I'm about to put windshield number 2 on the xb, had about 5 nice cracks and one finally spidered. I'm thinking about having Safelite do the work and then get someone to put Clear Plex on the windshield. I live in NJ and can't find an installer of the stuff?? Anyone else here hear of this stuff??

you might want to check with your local law enforcement, but plexiglass windows are illegal in many states. It is normally intended for race cars only and even then, the legality will vary depending on the thickness of the glass. You could forget about using your windshield wipers as they will scratch the heck out of the plexi. You would also need to find a plexi that is UV safe and will not discolor when exposed to the elements. If you still want to try this out, check out Percy's Speedglass, we use them on our race cars and after two seasons, they're still looking good.

First, thats a horrible idea for any street driven car if only for the fact you cant use your windshield wipers.

Second, a windshield in a modern automobile plays a large part in the structural integrity of the roof and a huge part in occupant safety during a accident. This why they haven't used butyl to hold windshields in place for years and years. Butyl isnt strong enough compared to the urethane and just lets the window pop out.

None of this matters in a racecar because the roof is only there for aerodynamics and looks. The rollcage is the structural part of this type of car, and the harness holds the driver in.

eehhhhh......I may be off here (although I doubt it) but after carefully reading the post it is my understanding oranguese has no intention of using a plexiglass window. I think what he is proposing is replacing the windshield with oem or comperable glass and then laminating it with a "clear bra" type material. This way, there is no structural weakness but rather added protection from future chips and cracks.

oranguese: I too have thought about such an idea, but unfortunately the adhesive used for that type of product doesnt remain clear and can blur over time or at least the 3M stuff does. Maybe the stuff you are talking about is different, but it is something to look into. Good luck and let us know if you find anything.

Ahh...I think you are correct. There is a product called ClearPlex. Its some kind of thermally applied windshield protection.

Back to the original question, try calling 800.225.1926 and ask where the closest dealer to you is.

if you cant come up with a solution you might look into changing your insurance. i pay an extra 3.00 i think and it suppose to pay for repair or replace a windshield. i had a crack on my chevy truck and they sent a guy to fix. no cost. i use country financial. i dont sell insurance , i am truck driver. hammer down!

Default Thanks

Yea the Clear Plex is a coating made for windshields, it takes the brunt of the road rocks and then you can replace the coating and not your windshield. Seems pretty cool especially for our cars.
I love my box, but the windshield is definately a downside. Hopefully I can find someone in NJ that installs this stuff.
