Default Hatch Removal

My 2006 silver xB got rear ended, not bad but it did scrunch the bumper and flattened the bottom of the hatch. There are several silver xB's in the LA and OC Pick Your Part yards right now, but I'm worried about trying to grab a hatch by myself. Anyone know how much they weigh, any tips on removing it? Thought about tackling mine first to figure it out, but then I'd have to drive to the Pick Your Part with a hatch.

Anyone have experience swapping out the hatch, tips and things to watch out for? I searched but all I can find are window, wiper, handle/latch and strut things; nothing about removing or installing the hatch itself.

Thanks in advance!

Well, there is wiring going into them. Not sure where that connector is - (guess, under the head liner???)
Take the struts with the door as they can be a bear to remove at the door end.
The door should be liftable, but it is bulky so probably safer with 2 people doing it. This is from lifting it without the aid of the struts, but with the hinges still attached.

As you say, you can take your crunched door off to find out all the tricky bit before you go. You can also find out if the door fits in the back with the seats down
There may even be some instruction on the toyota TIS website

At the salvage yard, climb in the back seat area and remove the door panel.

Use your hand to manipulate the door latch cable so that the door can be opened (no electrical power to release the latch).

Open the door.

Cut the window washer fluid hose.

Cut the wire harness at the top of the door.

Remove the four 10mm bolts which secure the struts to the car.

Remove the four 12mm bolts which secure the door to the car.

Remove the door.

It's that simple however, you'll want a second pair of hands helping you to hold the door up.

On your car, open the rear door, remove the door panel.

Disconnect all the electrical connectors. (Don't forget about the top brake light connector).

Remove the screw which secures the two white electrical wires to the door.

Top right corner of the door.......pull the wire harness tube out of the door.

Pull/feed the door wires out of the door where the tube was pulled out.

I forget how the washer nozzle tube goes, but it pulls right off the nozzle.

When reinstalling the wires, you'll need something to "fish" it thru the door channel along the side as well as up top (for the brake light).

Also, DONT use the door "handle" to carry the door, because the handle will break (if it's not broken already).

The door will fit in the back of the car with rear seats folded. I don't think the door weighs more than 50Lbs.

Oh, and a few layers of painters tape wrapped around the top edge of the door is a good way to prevent scratching the paint surfaces.

Personally, I'd pull the wiring harness out intact rather than cutting it. That way you'll have a spare in case the original one on the car is damaged. Same with the washer hose.

I know.......you're right.

In my mind I was thinking of myself.........do I really need more random car parts shuffling around my shop for an unknown amount of time? As it is, one of the service bays in my shop has "trails" in it so me and my crew can get around/thru all the random car parts.

But yeah, if the unneeded parts are included with the selling price, then yes, get the harness and hose.
