OEM Parts -- specifically, the Door
Hey guys, I'm not always here on scionlife, because I have a corolla but my sis has an xB so I'm here now.
well today, my sis was backin up and my dad opened the door at the wrong time and the tree jammed the door so badly that I do believe that we need a new door.
well, I can't claim this on the insurance so I am goin to have to find a way to fix it myself or go to the body shop. Before goin to the shop I would like to know the price of a new door.
So I'd like to know where I can get this info before goin to the body shop.
btw, here is the damage:

have you inspected the hinges and b-pillar for damage yet?
contact the dealership - they can price the door for you, and if you're going to a body shop, that will be the most comparable price.

Yup you need a door...used door if you can find one may be a good deal...and you might need some repair to the hinge post. You may also need a latch...pics look like maybe there is some twisting of it??? If I was at work i could look up the door's list price...but alas I am at home now:/ In order to replace the door and have the color look consistant (match) along the side of the car they should paint the front door, nad blend paint the rear door and 1/4 panel. if you get a new door you will also need the pieces on black plastic vinyl transfer (3) for it also the are $50-70 each so 150-200 just for those...I would bet the door itself lists for between 350 and 600. Get the pricing from bodyshop and dealer perhaps and then look for used parts (if the BS/ dealer couldn't find used) if the used price is $150 or more $$ less than new parts (new door plus plastics and maybe latch) go used. (you must remember that using a use door takes more labor (dissassmebly for paint and transfering your exisiting parts...or did you want that junk in the used door the last guy beat on??) to do a really good job so that is why I said used must cost more than $150 less than new to be truely cost effective, extra $100 or more labor involved and for less than $50-75 difference you might as well have new I would think). Good luck.

____...u gotta love family.
went to a body shop today...they quoted 1400....and 1250 for cash.
ouch! how much for the door itself?
like ted said, now is the time to start looking for used. maybe a junkyard? (btw ted did all that paint n his box himself, and i think he really knows what he's talking about)

just called the dealership from where she got the Box...they said door is 530 bux OEM. the guy at the body shop said its 800 bux...so I'm gonna go to another shop.
I'm also gonna see a junkyard nearby has it

That door should not be fixed. it is too far compressed to be "stretched out" and have the integrity of the skin to the shell of the door be anywhere near like it should be. I AM at my shop now and the new doors lists for $436.27 from Scion. If the dealer is saying the price of the door is $500 they are marking it up. If the bodyshop you went to was actually charging you $800 for the door itself they are ripping you off. My estimating system gets updated parts pricing data monthly and it is showing $436.27 list price, the labor to change the door is 4.6 hours, the labor to paint the door is 3.2 hours. The system allows for $83.20 in paint cost for the door (not enough if that is all that is being painted (cost will be more like $125 for the paints), but once you add in the labor times to belnd refinish the front door and 1/4 panel the system would likely allow enuf in materials to do the job (materials cost is based on paint labor hours times the paint allowance per hour which here in Atlanta is $26 per paint labor hour).
I ran an estimate and the cost of replacing the door with new parts with no blending of adjacent panels (labor rate $38 per hour with materials at $26 per paint labor hour) is $1107.97 with the door and the 3 pieces of tape for the door costing $560.73 plus tax and the rest being labor and paint cost. From my post above that means that a used door (if it is nice and not damaged) is a good bet if you can buy it for $400. adding the necessary blending for color match (right front door and 1/4 panel) and parts removal for paint access (including removing and installing the 1/4 panel window (a judgement call but I added it as to have a higher price rather than a lower one) comes to $1420.39. This assumes that there is no damage to the hinge post where the door mounts to the car. Hope this helps! Better luck!!!

Try www.car-part.com You should be able to find a complete door assembly in the same color and have it shipped to your door. Just bolt it on DONE!

Hmmm good plan but there is a better than 80% chance it will not match. Colors are not consistant from car to car close but not exact. Depending on how lucky you are suych a door would likely be close in color but it could be way way off as well.

It be better than what they got. We had a club member change out both doors on one side and they matched perfectly. It also happened to be TCM too. If they can get the whole door shipped for under 400 they could possibly fix that thing for under 500 total. That is what I'd do under those circumstances. I still find a few of those things strange.
1. Why did he open a door while the car was moving?
2. Why no insurance claim on such a new vehicle?
3. Why dad would not fix his daughters car is beyond me?
Just a strange situation with an even stranger fix in the future.

That I certainly agree with. If you get the doot and it matchs good then your in fat city
If it doesn't match then at $400 it is still a savings over the new door and you take it to the bodyshop for painting and blending and still save a little cash. (just don't go to the place that says the door costs $800)

1. My dad is notorious in doing that when parking. he thinks the car is parked and he moves out.
2. we made a report to GEICO, and they said if the estimate is more than 1000 bux, then go for the claim. if not, don't, because my deductable is 1000 bux.
3. reason why he would not fix it is because sis pays for car and insurance but they pay for her food...she lives w/ them...she's 19.
I also agree that the dad not paying for the damages is crap. Ok that's nice of them to pay for food and whatever else, but damage to personal property and furthermore a bill of $1000+ is something he must take care of. I couldn't let myself do that someone, especially in a new(er) car. I cannot imagine what I would do in her situation, but it would not have a happy ending.
On the bright side... that post by Ted, that was gold. Great work with the price quotes and explanation!

ben... you crack me up
tell dear ol dad he's not welcome in the cars anymore.
I would agree that it might be best to try the used TCM door - worst case scenario, it would limp you along until you could put it in a paint booth.
