You'll probably get several slight variations on the process but the basics should all be pretty much the same.

For bare metal:
1. Sand
2. Prime
3. Sand
4. Paint
5. Clearcoat if desired or required by type of paint

For an already painted piece:
1. Sand
2. Paint
3. Clearcoat if desired or required by type of paint

For sanding metal parts I think most would agree 600 grit is appropriate maybe even 400 grit.

The most important things about painting are prep and workspace. Most of your time will be spent prepping the part. That includes sanding, cleaning, priming. You want as close to a perfect surface as possible to paint on. You need to have a nice clean workspace. You don't want dust and dirt to get on your fresh paint.

As for type of paint, most posts I've seen recommend Duplicolor. I've also seen many posts where members had good results with almost any type of spray paint.

I had mine powdercoated, and it only cost me $20 or $25 dollars can't remember which one.
Well worth all the work of painting it yourself, plus powdercoating is alot more durrable(sp?).
