The paintwork shouldn't cost you more than $400-600, assuming you take them the pieces loose....it will likely cost more if they are removing and installing parts as well.

Sweet!! That is really good price to paint 4 lip pieces. Good materials alone will cost around $150. If they are installing and painting for that price it is indeed cheap. I said above, it should not cost more than $400-600...I did not mean it would cost that much but that any more than that range would be too much. What you pay kinda depends on what they are giving you. How good a preparation are they going to do? What level of materials are they using?? Do the parts need any work prior to painting....most kit pieces need considerable work before they are painted to really turn out nice. Make sure you know what you are buying with your money and what the expected result is before they do the job. Hope it comes out super!!!

that's about what it will look like. black , visually, will ll off into the background and shadows making it appear that your box is about 4 in higher than it is.

front is easy, take off the grille, you've got a few 10mm up top, one in each wheelwell, and there are 10 10mm bolts along the underside lip.

skirts: lay a towel underneath, covering the entire skirt . remove 8 plastic plugs from underneath, then take off the plugs at each end, and get the bolts with a 10mm. pull from the top edge, and pop off the panel fasteners.

rear: 10mm just crawl under there, it's a breeze, but i don't remember the bolt locations.

Hmmm never seen a kit that mounts quite like that tho it would be refreshing!! Factory lips remove like Cherrybox says, pretty easy. You are likely to break a clip or 2 on the upper side lips tho. The dealer will have replacements without much trouble however.

If you are talking about painting the factory lips or any lip kit black on a red xB I would advise you not to. I think it would look funny. The only lips I have seen that are not painted body color that look even a little ok IMO are carbon fiber kits. I personally do not like that look at all with the possible exception of CF lip pieces on a solar yellow RS. Painting factory lips black would look "I think" like you couldn't afford a CF kit but wanted to try to look like it had one.

I would say if you want to enhance the look of your box...assuming that that is your box in your first post....you should spend your money on some lowering springs and or some wheels...or perhaps a different grille setup. The statement would be better than blend into the ground make the box look even taller black factory lips. The first 2 ....springs and wheels (larger diameter) would also improve the vehicles performance (handling).

^^^ oop there it is - the paint master himself says 'don't do it'

IMO, that four hundy would be better spent toward a set of sportmax 501s and some springs

Black grille would look good...complements the black lower grilles. For a 2 inch drop I highly recommend the Goldline springs. Ride great and handle well also.

the goldlines are about 150 -

if you're getting wheels, make sure and do your homework as to what offsets will work and look good. you may wantto consider saving the extra cash and inch up the 17s to 18. If you're thinking of going big, you may look at the 17s and wish you had.

yeah, i think he means a stock grille in black.

Cheapest black grille would be to paint the stock one. The problem is what to do with the Scion emblem. It can be left as is (simply snap it out paint the grille and snap it back in), or it could be blacked out as well. I would remove the emblem and paint the grille and see how I liked it with the silver emblem. If I didn't like that I could easily remove the emblem black it and reinstall it .

A third option (the coolest look for a stock grille IMO is to remove the emblem and modify the grille so it is continuous bars all the way across the emblem area. This way is not easy easy to do but looks very nice.

Another option is a replacment grille. Many of these can be seen here https://www.scionlife.com/parts/?sub=12 Some are black and virtually any could be painted black.

problems with 18" is

1) bumpier ride

2) they are CRAZY expensive. i wanted initially 16" but i learned they are 148 while 17"s are 152 not that big of difference and well worth it.

and the grille thing.... could I paint it black or would i want a pro shop to do it? and i dont like the grilles with the split in the center or with the fog lights built in. its cool, but it makes the grille area too small, looks weird. and i cannot fiberglass nor would i try (i suck at arts and crafts) so as much as i would like to do the continious look, im not talented enough...
someone want to photoshop a black grille on?

18's do not ride that bad if you use 215/40/18 tires....they ride almost as well as the standard diameter 17's. With the more normal 215/35/18 I agree that the ride is harsh. If you want a soft ride then the 17's are prolly the best choice.

As far as painting the grille. All you would have to do is remove it, snap out the emblem, sand it (about a 600 grit wet sandpaper would be a good choice), and paint it with a high quality spray can. I would recommend a semi gloss Duplicolor brand trim black if it can be found. A gloss black would also work but to better match the lower grilles semigloss look I think a semi would be better. Another excellent brand is Sem (found at local body supply/auto paint stores I bet), their trim black is about a 60% gloss semigloss that would weather well.

By the way. A good way to get a really good idea how you would like the new look is to purchase a couple rolls of black plastic electrical tape. Tape the grille bars etc black. You could either remove it tape and reinstall or just tape with it in place. Certainly remove the emblem and reinstall it after taping. Stand back 30 feet and see if you like the look. If you do not then untape and your back to stock again
