Default Spare relocation on to rear hatch...

I was tryin to think of ways to relocate my spare to free up room for woofers or whatever and still maintain room for cargo. Then I came up with this idea. I havent seen it done, dont know if anyone one has thought about this, but what about smoothin the rear hatch and buyin a fifth aftermarket wheel and fabricating a system to fasten it to the rear like an SUV. I know someone with an H3 with this type of set up. I was just curious to hear peoples opinion. I think it would be original and may look good if done right, just not sure. Maybe even make the rear open to the side rather than top. Post what you think. Thanx.

I also noticed on an old post someone post about a swing away system, but i dont want some ugly contraption like that on the back, which is why I suggested fabricating hinges so the door swings to the side, but even without that, you could just find heftier door struts.

There ya go it has been done, BUT, I would be very concerned about the strength of the gate to hold the spare for long term use (it isn't very strong). It would also be very hard to lift (heavy) and would not stay up on the factory lifts for sure. A swing away mount into the 1/4 panel area would be better as far as gate operation , but, again the strength at the points you would mount the spare swingaway unit would be the problem. not much strenght in that area either. A good fabricator might be able to find a solution to that strength issue tho.

Is it me or does that wheel and tire on the back look out of shape. Look at the top left portion closest to the window it looks like the tires is flat or out of round....is this a photo shop pic.

Just a word of warning, don't buying anything from James. He ripped me off. I bought his side skirts and he never shipped them.

I am thinking a continental kit and fender skirts would be a unique look if it could be pulled off right...........

Ummm, just loose the spare completely and either carry fix a flat or get road service coverage where they are required to bring a spare tire or just tow you in.
The whole idea of the tire hanging from the hatch seems ludicrous and fugly.
