Default Spiderlite's for XB tails???

Has anyone seen these-

''

Pretty friggin cool... I wonder if they fit in the XB's stock housing. The 3-arm ones are $70 a pair, seems reasonable.

Not a bad idea, but IIRC the xB taillight housing has a red lens that fits pretty closely around the bulb. There probably isn't room for the "spider" to expand

Couldn't the cover be removed so just the spider is in there? The LED's are red...

So who's gonna be the first one to rock them? It looks like the three-armed ones are the type that fit japanese cars...

That could be done, but since this involves disassembling the taillight you might as well install an array of LEDs that would be cheaper and better than the rather pricey "spiders"

Also, removing the red lenses from the taillights will technically make them illegal. Not a biggie, but sometimes modded cars are examined with a fine-tooth comb for violations.

One problem with LED retrofits it that the taillight lens/reflector is designed to work with a single point source of light at the focus of the reflector. LEDs introduce several sources of light that are not at the focus of the reflector/lens combination. This can be partially mitigated by placing the LEDs near to the lens. and by using a large number of LEDs. The "spider" style bulbs don't really do this well.

Removing the reflector will make them illegal, it's a separate piece from the red cap over the bulb.

Right... the reflector is in the lower part of the housing. Wasn't talking about removing that.

not to hyjack the thread but this is how my led bulds work, and to further explain what george is talking about

^^ conventional 45 degree LED automotive bulb, light doesnt hit reflector

^^(1 45 Degree angle Forward facing LEDS (6) 45 Degree Side Facing LEDS Light Hits Reflector and Fills Lens.

does the spider light spin?

Yeah, that's what I was getting at.

LED lights are really good if properly engineered. The brighness, color intensity, and instant-on characteristics make them really stand out. Unfortunately, proper engineering also involves spreading the LEDS out over a broad area of the taillight lens. LED Bulb replacements just don't do that, but try to mimic incandescent bulbs with sideways-facing LEDs.

The other problem is that LEDs produce light of only one wavelength, which is why their color is perceived as so intense. Unfortunately, if the red lens happens to filter out that wavelength you lose intensity. Better to just have the LED shine directly without benefit of a lens.

Unfortunately, the law has not caught up with the technology, since it still insists upon a red lens.

Side note: Our local sheriff has a "teen fatality display vehicle" that it hauls around to the local schools on a trailer. The trailer isn't registered and has distinctly illegal clear taillights and marker lights. I really doubt that it'll get a fix-it ticket, though!
