Default Spoiler Question

This might have been covered before, but I couldn't find what I was looking for in the search. Here is my question...If I install the OEM spoiler, and drill the holes..if I decided later on I want to do a body kit and different spoiler..will the drilled holes be visible? I have no specific spoiler or body kit in mind, I'm talking in general…

Thanks,

Chris

I don't know if they would be visible, but I wouldnt drill holes. Not only would you have to worry about it rusting after you did, but many people just use double-sided tape for the oem spoiler w/o any problems. Hope this helps!

Yup! I have seen a number of posts stationg that double sided auto attachmant tape works great. The stuff is strong if it is used correctly. Use only 3M. YOU MUST clean both surfaces well before using the tape...it does not like dirt or any oils or waxes. You wash (soap and water) the inside surface of the spoiler and the gate where the spooler will mount. Then you need to wipe these areas with a grease and wax remover (see your local auto body paint supplier for the best products). Allow to dry for at least 20 minutes longer is better (ask grease and wax remover supplier about how long to wait...the before painting time is adequate...but longer wont hurt anything). PREFIT the part to the gate, use a flashlight if needed, and look all underneath it. Try to see where it will very closely contact the roof and where it will not. Also pay attention to exactly how you want to positionit when you mount it. Once it is aligned to exactly where you want it use some masking tape to outline the edges so you can easily position it once it is time to tape it down. Apply the 2 sided tape to all areas where the spoiler closely contact the gate. Now you have 2 choices. You can peel the backing from the tape align the spoiler over where it mounts and put it in place dry...once it touches it may not move at all so you must be accurate (or you will be pull some tape off and trying again). I think the tape gets its strongest adhesion this way. Press the piece into place everywhere across the entire surface, repress it a few times over the next few days. People have said they have used a wetting solution of a little dish soap in some water (like you use to apply clear masks or vinyl decals). This allows a little movement as you position you piece, you also must hold the piece in place and press it down for a while till the moisture drys some. go back later a # of times over a week and repress it. ( I do not like this idea I think some water will be trapped in bubbles under the tape reducing its strength, but given the way the xB spolier mounts over the near 90 degree top edge of the gate it would certainly help positioning).

Be sure to buy the 3M with the red tape on the adhesive. It is the stronger automotive adhesive

Awesome. thanks for all the info...the only problem I can think of is that I'm in AZ...so when its 120 degrees and the xB is in the parking lot will the 3M heat up and loose its grip? I don't want to see the spoiler fall off in the rear view

Yeah it should be fine in the heat, just make sure the spoiler and the car are the same temp!! So let the spoiler sit outside for a little while with the car so they bond correctly.

We drill holes in all of our tC pedestal spoilers. I would agree with ShowTimeXB in that when it gets well over 100 in the late spring , I wouldn't even trust 3M film to hold my spoiler on when going 85 on the freeway!

A pedestal spoiler has little contact area with the lid, the xB spoilers to the best of my knowledge would all have fairly large contact areas. If the spoiler you intend to put on an xb doesn't have an inch+ at least across top the front and bottom rear then I would drill to be sure, put tape where ever it will contact beyond this minimum as more surface area taped is stronger.

The tape should be fine. And personally, I personally would rather take the risk of taping my spoiler on (though I honestly dont think you have to worry about it) and it possibly falling off, then drill holes in the roof of my brand new xB, not have to worry about my spoiler falling off, but have to worry about my roof rusting. No thanks. Ive had my days of Hondas, i'd prefer to stay as far away from rust as possible. If theres any way I can prevent it, I sure will, and i'll never do anything to promote rust. Even in AZ, you car can rust, not as quickly or badly but bare metal is going to rust no matter what, guaranteed.

I think I'm going to try the tape method...when it starts to get hot again I'll keep an eye on the spoiler to see if its coming off. I suppose its cheap enough to replace if it falls off...

I realy doubt it'll rust or car companies would be sued out of existance with stuff rusting because of wings they installed.
