Default taillight weather stripping question

Hey guys, I've been drooling over this forum for a while and finally got a 2006 xB a few weeks ago (shadow mica). I just got these tailights off of ebay and I know I should use the stock weather stripping but the new taillights seem to have pretty substantial stripping on them already, it actually makes the stock ones look dinky. Now is it a matter of aftermarket stripping not making a good seal or is it a matter of porous material?

I'll post pictures soon, my camera sucks so I have to borrow my girlfriend's.
