I've only 'lurked' for the most part, and have received a lot of good information. Thanks.


Well, it's the end of an era.
My '04 xB (Thundercloud Metallic) has officially been declared a total loss.

This car has been the absolute best car I've ever owned.
It has been garage parked (day and night) since I bought it new, in May of 2004. There has never been one scratch or blemish on this car, with the exception of ONE (rock) chip in the windshield. Period.
Replaced the front brakes at 41,000 miles, and the back brakes at 52,000 miles.
Tires replaced (put BF Goodrich "Traction T/A" on it) at 45,500 miles.

Oil changes at 3,000 mile intervals. 3,000 hard miles.
Don't believe it when someone says that Fram filters are junk. They are NOT.
Pennzoil 5w-30 'dino' oil.
To this day, this car does not use/lose one drop of oil between changes.

Front brakes changed (again) at 83,000 miles.
The car now has 84,400 miles on it, and it runs like it is still new!!!

May 14, 2010.
This area (Southern Maryland) had one of the worst hail storms, ever.

My beloved xB now looks like a Thundercloud Metallic Golf Ball!

The insurance company said that the hood, roof, left front fender, right front fender and windshield have to be replaced.
The original damage was said to be $5,400 + change.
The insurance company wrote me a check the day they appraised it.

I took the car to the local Toyota/Scion dealer and had them look it over, before starting repairs, per my insurance company. (To make sure nothing was missed.)
I got a call from my insurance company two days later, and they said that the claim was being transferred to the 'total loss' department.
The damages were raised another $2,000+! (The liftgate and spoiler now had to be replaced!)

Total damages in excess of $7,450!

The insurance company wanted to 'give me' $8,000.
NOT!
I told them that I'm not getting the short end of the stick, on this car.
I faxed them the original bill of sale, with all the 'extras' that I had put on the car, and they called me back, and said that they are writing a check for $9,500+.

Well, the end is near.
This great little car is going to be destroyed. (I think it'll wind up in S. Carolina or Georgia, and the title will be 'washed', and then re-sold for $10,000+.)

I'm really going to miss this car.

 

if it's just body damage...throw some new glass in it and drive it until it dies..20 or 30 years from now

actually I'm sorry to hear of your misfortune...you might be able to find one with less miles on it..in your price range

I asked the insurance adjuster if I could 'cancel' the claim and just drive my golf ball.

"No. It is documented, now."

I can buy the car back, for $2,600.00, BUT, in Maryland, I'd have to get a 'Salvage Title' and I could only carry "Liability" insurance, plus, I talked to the sales manager where I bought this xB, and he said that no dealer would 'touch' that car, on a trade-in, with a 'salvage title'.

I'm screwed on this car.

This xB has honestly been the best car I've ever owned. . . and I've owned a bunch of cars!

Get another one!! My husband totalled my xA about a month ago.. Within a week.. I had the same model, same year, and same color.. I wouldn't trade my Scion for anything.. cept maybe another Scion! Oh.. or maybe a toyota Ist AWD..

 

I'd buy it back and use it as a commuter, who cares if a dealer would ever give you anything for it. drive it till the wheels fall off. Then, i'd take the 6,900.00 left over and buy ANOTHER xB!

 

Sorry to hear, I'm in St. Mary's and didn't get hit like that. I've seen a few xB's around here at used lots for $8k, you can always find another if you really want.

 

that sucks.id also buy it back and drive it till the wheels fall of and save the cash.or you can buy my xb?? im trying to sell it for a down payment on a house.

 

Sad to see an xB Classic go down, like that, Keith, especially one that has been lovingly cared for and has done it's job well.

Ditto on the "buy another one" suggestion. You should easily be able to find one for $9500.

 

buy it back..I agree with BBzero

it's not that hard to re-instate your registration..carry the liability insurance and never sweat dings again

anyway...at worst..it will make a good parts car...

There's a small lot around here that has an '06 listed on craigslist for $11,495 bone stock. Now that's funny. Alternately, the Scion dealership has an '08 for $11,694.

 

Buy VIP Camos, his is very well done.

Didn't someone awhile back want to test and see if a dimpled xB got better mileage with the change in aerodynamics?

Buy it back and drive it till it really dies, and mod it to your hearts content. Would make a great project.

 

Yea I would buy the car back. If they offered the buy back to you at $2600. you should counter offer for $2000. They might just take it. Have some some body work done at a regular shop (not the dealership) and for a few thousand you have another Scion you could sell with a "Salvage" title for cheap or use the car yourself as a beater.

 

Well, after discussing our options, my wife and I talked with our 18 year old daughter, to see if she would be interested in driving it to/from college, IF we had most (if not all) of the dings removed.

She's not interested.

The insurance check is in our hands, and the xB is in the driveway, tags removed, and ready to be taken away.

My wife and I have also made arrangements to pick up a new car, today.
My wife does not want a 'new' xB. She thinks they are 'butt ugly'. (Her words!)
So, we've made a deal on a new '11 Camry SE.


The person that winds up getting our xB is getting one great little car! It has served us well, and has given us a lot of driving pleasure.
