1st Gen xB electrical problem..Am I getting screwed?
I had a few lights in my car go off (VSC, Track off), and so I did some research on here, and saw a bunch of people have the same issue... so I took my xB in (because It's still under warranty).
They told me that a rodent of some sort had chewed some wiring and it would need to be replaced. Error codes: C0205 and C1223 came up. They charged me 96.81.
They then proceeded to tell me it would cost 400.00 to fix. (They would not be replacing ALL the wiring, just the ones that are defective)
I asked them what wiring specifically, and they said, "until we get in there and look, we won't know for sure".
So... did I just pay for them to hook up my car to a computer and spew out a few error codes?
Also, I had someone have this exact problem with a Chrysler van, and it cost them a little over 100.00 to diagnose AND fix...
Discuss.

well if a rodent chewed some wire then you should try to verify... the computer will show the codes but not say oh a rodent chewed on this certin wire.... i say check for yourself i had those lights come on due to having too much oil in my intake filter so i eneded up cleaning the mass airflow sensor and problem went away

If the dealer truely saw chewed wires they could have easily showed you them. If it's only a few lengths of wire they can splice and solder in new pieces no problem. Maybe 3 hrs of shop time. They should apply the diagnostic charges toward the repair bill also.
The whole repair should cost no more than a max of 300 bucks TOTAL with diagnostics included. Other wise since it's not covered under warranty. Take it to a place that specializes in auto electrics and get a better estimate or confirmation the the dealer wasn't trying to take you for a ride.
I suspect your dealer is not being truthful. It's prolly an easy fix and they just need an excuse for charging you more. my 2 cents.

So, lets say I went in to the dealership to get my oil changed for 9.95 (Like I do every 3k miles) Would they have seen the lights during the tune-up and ran the diagnostic as part of the oil-change?

I took mine in for my CC not working abs light and a few others, they claimed I had a bunch of wires melted under the dash, well they charged me $60 after fixing, well when I paid and looked at the bill the only thing I saw on there was "replaced fuse, $60" and they had it in the shop for 3 freaking hours! for a frigging fuse, they claimed I made it blow, I asked how? by using the brakes?!

i know its off subject (kind of)...but i used to have a bagged s-10...and i loved getting oil changes in it at wal mart cuz i would set the frame on the ground and watch them walk around it for 10 minutes or so wondering how the heck i could even drive it...hahaha still brings a smile to my face...but back to my story......i went for an oil change one day and when i got home i noticed there was a lot of oil in my driveway, popped the hood and saw oil all around my head and down the block...well i took it to a mechanic and they said that someone filled it to the rim with oil (like 8 quarts or something) and he said when the pressure got up it had nowhere to go but out...wal mart never did anything, they actually told me they never saw that truck before in their life...so you better believe my beloved box will never be parked at the tire and lube express...ok i feel better now...lol...sorry for the long write up
