Default 2006 xB Parking Brake Problem!!!

Weirdest thing happend today, i backed car out of garrage to wash it about 8ft, washed car then i put it back in garrage put in park and set parking brake, latter on in the day i went to go take car out for a spin and when i tried to back out, the car would not move like some one blocked the wheels, so i get out of car make sure my kids didint get the soccer ball stuck or anything else, all was clear but the car still would not move, so I stepped on the gass and when i started to move i could feel the car start to squat like the parking brake was left on and it still would not move. I finnaly just mashed the gas to get car out of garrage and the right rear was locked up and skided for about three feet, i finnaly took my rubber mallet and nocked on the drum and finnaly the brake released, I notice know that the parking brake handle works a lot better. All i can think of is some how the parking brake cable got stuck some how, what i would like to know is when you set the parking brake is it just the right rear or both. Please let me know if some one knows if this little car is supposed to set both L/R or just the right.

Thanks,

Erik

Default ...Yes this happens...

I had the same thing happen to me..... sort of....

Stopped on Rt. 95 to get gas, I was pumpung gas as I was cleaning my windshield when I heard the overflow sounds of a gas spill. About a gallon spilled out because the pump was broken. I stopped the flow and wanted to roll the car off the gas puddle.
I was in nutural, brake handle off,(down). The rear driver wheel was locked.
I had to engauage and dis-engauge the parking brake a few times before it freed up.
I broke the glass to get at the fire extinguisher and sprayed the area. The non-english speaking illegal alien who works there was no help at all and would not close broken pump #7. The rest rooms were filthy so I knew that this oil company reaps billions in proffits every quarter.
If it happens again, you know what to do...
Do not try to drive-thru the problem, engauge and dis-engauge the hand brake instead, to free up the rear drum brake pads.

Default ...Who knows for sure?....Post up...

I did not look on the right side of the car, I was on the drivers side.
When the brake engauges, metal meets metal and can hang, or stick in place. Even though there are springs to release the braking action, either the cable gets hung up on some thing or the brakes catch and need a good hit to free it up. I tried rolling forward and I tried pushing backwards but it seemed to be locked.

I will be watching this thread to find out if the hand break cable pulls both of the read drum breaks or just one side. I hope it locks both of them, one wheel could be on a frozen puddle and the car might slide away.

I think that your left rear got hung/stuck.

It pulls both sides. You can see a cable going to each side whith the wheels off. I hardly ever use mine cause it's an auto but have never had it stick. I'd suggest lubing up the cable more often with spray lube (the type used on motorcycle chains NOT just WD40).
May have been related to getting the cable wet when you washed the car??? This is not the first time I've heard of this either.

Default ....YO JETHRO....

I recall my mechanic guru buddy, under a car, using white lithium grease to lube the parking brake cable, but only where it touches something, a possible binding point or pinch point.

WE SHOULD USE BOLD CAPS TO SAY "NEVER GREASE THE BRAKES"

All different levels might read this, so wanted to be clear for the brake job novice.

My lock-up happened when hot. after (or during, or before) a possible gas bath.
