Default 3 Free Oil Changes?

I just bought a used '06 XB and while reading the owners and maintenence manuals, I noticed something about 3 free oil changes, supposedly good anytime up to 36k miles. There are spots in the book where the dealer is supposed to stamp it when they're done, but they're blank.
Anyone know about this?
It doesn't say whether it's limited to the original owner. Wonder if it's still good?

dunno... sometimes the delearships themselves keep a record of the vehicle on the computer vice bothering signing the booklet.

so it really depends... as far as original owner.. it's not limited to that... but you can't be sure that you have them or not just because the booklet is blank.

If the original owner chose not to use them have the dealer use your VIN and they should still be there for you to use. They go with the car IMO. Good luck! I wish I could give mine to someone cause I will never use them either.

It has 11k miles on it, so 2 could already be used.
I'll check with a dealer and see what's up!
Thanks for the heads up.

I had mine done at the dealer where I bought the car. At 2500, 5000 and 10000 miles. They never stamped anything - just gave me receipts for the work performend. I think they track this on their computers in the dealership.

Yes--they keep a complete record of maintenance done.

I dont think they will stamp the book unless you leave it out on the seat or dash for them.
On my first oil change I assumed they would go in the glove box and get the book, but they didnt. Guess they dont want to find something they aren't looking for... or something.

So I left it out for them the next time and they stamped it.

This is true, as I "insisted" they stamped the book when they performed my maintenance. I know it's supposed to be in their computer, but it's nice to have it on hardcopy as well.

I used my 3 freebies at 2500, 5,000, and 10,000 miles. The 15,000 I had to pay for :-(

You are going 5K between changes on dino oil? It scares me to go that long on synthetic.

Why not? The 3k oil change is a scheme though up by the big oil companies to make lots of money for them (didn't you know that?)

Seriously, today's oils (even dono) are far superior to ones available just few years back. Even the Scion maintenence manual recommended a change every 5k. Do you think they would recommend that if it drastically shortened engine life (and they would have to waste money on warranty engine repairs?)

Besides my car is not in severe service and it is driven 5 days per week (long enough for the engine to fully warm up, twice a day). So, I dont' see any harm in following the Scion recommendations.

Don't some extended service synt oil users wait 10k before changing oil? Now that is a bit too long even for me.

Yes, I am. I agree with peteski. The 3k deal is not necessary. Scion recommends 5k mile changes and that's what I'm doing. Like he said, today's oils and particularly, today's engines are so good that a good quality standard oil is more than sufficient.

Hell, my wife's Nissan Versa has a recommended interval of 7500 miles.

They never stamped mine, and I have one left.

I switched to synthetic and paid the extra last time, then switched it to Mobile 1 and do it on my own. It's a major hassle to go and wait for hours at the dealership, so I avoid it when I can.

***Edit*** The dealer tried the 3k miles BS on me. If it was dino oil, I would agree. But Mobile One full synthetic and a fresh filter every 5k is just fine.

they always put the milage at 3k on the little reminder sticker in the window.
Theyre trying to get more money from you more frequently is all.

The dealer I bought from has this thing where they give free oil changes for as long as you own a new car bought from them, every 5,000 or 6 months.

I'm going every 6 months seeing as I don't log that many miles.

I'd call the dealer and have them run your VIN and see if there are any remaining that you could use! Let us know what you find out please?
