30,000-mile $ervice

When I was a Service Advisor for a Jeep dealership, I used to get a 10% bonus on every 30K or 60K service I sold. They are a real moneymaker for the service dept, because they bill out the time for all the tasks involved, but many can be done simultaneously. I just try to cover different parts with my oil changes. Coolant service one time, tranny another, etc. It's a lot easier on the pocketbook.
I'll do routine oil changes and the like myself. However, I've always taken my cars in to the dealer every couple years (typically at 30K) to make sure all the "hidden" recalls and service bulletins are performed, and for a once-over by someone who, presumably, is better trained on that particular car than I.
The $499 included all of the items in the Scion service manual (including new plugs, couple new filters, etc.), plus a tire rotation. That's it.
Same dealer charges $179 for its 15K service, and $89 for the 7.5K service (I've done neither there). Seems to be the same pricing for all Toyota/Scion vehicles, which I also find strange.

Now don't get me wrong if brake job is necessary, trans, ect... there is an additional charge. But what I put in the above post is exactly what is recomended to do. Period.
The dealership should have recomended service prices and exactly what is supposed to be done on their website.

I was dealing w/ the same sort of issue but I replaced all my filters and my service manager told me the tranny fluid was fine before I left it with them.
All I got was an oil change and rotate tires. I think it was $70 total, that may even be on the steep side.

I find the stated prices for service weird too. The 30k service also appears to include new plugs. Threre's some back and forth in the forum on iridiums, and they might add $27 to $32 to the price retail. But other than the plugs and air filter, there's nothing different in the service than there is for the 5k oil change and look over. The listed 5K price is $70 in NoVA. The stated 30K price is $332. So that's $262 for an air filter and four spark plugs. Sounds like a deal to me.
And when I asked the service rep whether they used iridium plugs, he said they didn't change the plugs on xBs. So the deal is even better.
Now they do include manual transmission & differential oil changes for cars driven in dusty conditions. But my feeling is that those changes are like the plugs -- they aren't needed and they aren't changed.
Whatever, I'm at 29.8K and getting ready to buy a filter, oil filter, and four quarts of oil, or if the weather is bad, take it my regular guy.
Cheers,

When I got my 30K done, the Manager said the Spark Plugs don't need changing & despite what our service guide says, they'll last another 30K. I just got the usual "5K Minor Service" check up (Oil chge ,brake adj, tire rotation). Didn't need Air Filter since I had a CAI put in recently.
mine cost a little over $500 this past August...
synthetic mobil 1 oil/filter change, trans oil change +trans additive, radiator coolant change + radiator additive, rotate tires, check all other parts such as undercarriage/brakes, no need to change my air filter since i have a fujita short ram kit, did NOT change spark plugs.Added a $20 surcharge for having to rotate my aftermarket 16" rims...jeez, they were even lighter than the stock oem steel wheels...!
And finish it off with a road test which they put a nail in (since they are located next to the access road where people dump items at the dump convenience center). Later I find on the comments of the bill invoice 'suspect tire noise', which I knew there were none before going in for the service. A few days later I hear a constant tapping sound(only when I put down my window..guess what..a nail in my front left tire!...ahh, so that's the 'suspect tire noise' which they did not even think to check after their road test!!!).
says their 30K is a major/costly expense for all toyotas/scions, they are the distributor for alll Scions/Toyotas in the Pacific Region (Servco Toyota/Scion).
I was upset at they not changing the spark plugs, one of their young old timers says to me a few days later 'don't you need to change the plugs every 100K?'. Told him, 'NO...that's for a TC!'
don't know if I will go back to Waipahu Toyota again...

Never been back since 11/02/05 and 28.5k miles. Oil/filter, brake pads and visual inspection of belts/hoses/fluids all done in my driveway, at my convenience.
Just bought NGK BKR5EIX plugs, going in at 30k with a oil/filter change, cabin filter and tire rotate.
hawaiiguy, your plugs should have been changed @30k per the factory schedule.

That service is high and another guy here had paid way too much and they didn't get his tire pressure right just before a long trip and he complained and got the entire service refunded but he paid in the $700 range including auto tranny oil change. Most of the service is an inspection and on a car lift will take very little time to do all of it. Plugs and the air cleaner filter are probably the hardest to do.
STANDARD PRICES FOR THIS SERVICE IS SUPPOSED TO BE POSTED IN THE WAITING ROOM FOR YOU TO SEE.
